Reform’s Russian bribe case triggers probe into overseas political interference

Keir Starmer has ordered a probe into foreign interference in British politics after a former top Reform politician admitted taking bribes from Russia.

Nathan Gill, the party’s ex-leader in Wales, was sentenced to 10-and-a-half years in prison last month for taking bribes to spout pro-Russia lines in interviews and speeches. Communities Secretary Steve Reed said the case was a “stain on our democracy” as he set out plans for an investigation into “countering foreign influence and interference in UK politics”.

He told MPs: “The facts are clear. A British politician took bribes to further the interests of the Russian regime, a regime which forcefully deported vulnerable Ukrainian children and delivered a deadly nerve agent attack on UK soil, killing a British citizen.

“This conduct is a stain on our democracy. This independent review will advance this government’s work to remove that stain.”
