Six-inch snow blast: What you need to know for the UK

  • Up to six inches of snow is forecast to sweep across parts of the UK within the next 72 hours. The predicted snowfall, which is around 5.9 inches, is expected to hit Scotland, North Wales, England, and Northern Ireland.
  • Weather maps indicate the first major strike is likely to be on Friday, December 19.
  • Twelve UK counties are identified as being in the firing line for the heaviest snow, including Highland, Argyll and Bute, Cumbria, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Cheshire, Gwynedd, Conwy, Powys, Dumfries and Galloway, and Antrim.
  • A White Christmas remains a possibility, with predictions suggesting snow could hit areas of the UK on the evening of December 25. Potential areas for snow include East Anglia, the Pennines, and the South East, with a chance of London.
  • Snow is forecast to descend by 6am on Boxing Day, hitting England’s east coast, the Midlands, the Peak District, the Pennines, and Gloucestershire.
  • Scattered flurries are also possible from Bristol in the west to Lincolnshire in the East around midday.
  • BBC Weather forecasters have warned of greater uncertainty in predictions beyond Christmas and into the New Year. Seasonably colder, relatively dry, and calm periods are the most probable outcome due to high pressure, with potential for frost and fog.
