CCTV shows shopkeeper fending off crook with a shovel
A brave shopkeeper went face-to-face with a thief when they came into his shop, threatened to “set him on fire” and tried to steal his till – by fighting him off with a shovel.
Shocking CCTV footage from the incident in Wembley, London, shows the innocent shopkeeper standing behind the counter unsuspectingly before a man in black clothes rushes in and pours a reddish brown liquid out of a jerry can behind the till and onto the floor.
The video then shows the man leaning over to try to rip out the cash till; however, the shopkeeper refuses to back down and goes into the back for a second before coming out towards the thief with a shovel.
It’s unclear whether the man is the shop owner or just an employee but he was clearly not willing to stand back and let someone take something that wasn’t theirs.
The shoplifter then runs out of shot but the worker follows him with the shovel up in the air – unwilling to let the intruder go.
The men then return back behind the till and there is some jostling and fighting between the two before a third man comes into the store and helps the shop worker secure the burglar.
By the end of the footage, the robber’s hood has come down off his face and he is fully exposed, having been completely apprehended by the fearless worker and the second man.
Many people have praised the shopkeeper for his actions.
One poster wrote: “Good on the shopkeeper defending his shop.”
While another said: “Well done to the shop keeper!! Showing other people how it’s done – instead of standing there watching it happen.”
Shoplifting is a major issue in London with reported offences up significantly – up by 54% in 2024. Over the past five years, London has seen an increase of a staggering 104% in shoplifting.
Retailers are also becoming frustrated with how long it is taking to bring thieves to justice – with those prosecuting waiting longer for criminals to face punishment than a decade ago.
