How to ‘de-age’ your mind with 4 easy habits – it is unhealthy information for people who smoke

Scientists at the University of Florida believe they have identified four key lifestyle habits that could enable you to literally ‘de-age’ your brain by eight years

Switching up just a small handful of positive lifestyle habits could make your brain eight years younger, new research suggests.

Scientists at the University of Florida discovered that “merely being optimistic”, getting enough deep sleep, managing stress and having a decent social support network were linked with a younger brain.

The study looked at 128 adults in midlife and older age from four different continents over a two-year period, the Daily Mail reports. Almost 70% of participants were women, with most living with chronic pain related to, or at risk of, knee osteoarthritis.

Boffins deployed MRI scans, machine learning techniques in order to estimate participant’s “brain age” compared with their actual age.

Those who had the healthiest mix of psychological and lifestyle factors had brains that appeared up to eight years younger than expected.

In contrast, the participants which had “older” brains had lifestyles where chronic pain, lower income, lower levels of education and social disadvantage all featured heavily.

Researchers also found that while the impact of hardship on brain ageing weakened over time, the benefits of positive lifestyle factors were stronger and went on for longer.

Other behaviours linked to healthier brain ageing included avoiding smoking and keeping a healthy body.

“The message is consistent across our studies,” said Kimberly Sibille, an associate professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Florida, who led the research.

She added: “Health–promoting behaviours are not only associated with lower pain and better physical functioning. They appear to actually bolster health in an additive fashion at a meaningful level.”

Whilst there are numerous benefits to growing older – such as feeling more established in life and gaining greater wisdom – it’s undeniable that the ageing process can become visible.

Many of us long to recapture our youthful appearance once we hit a certain milestone. Whilst we may be perfectly content with ourselves, attempting to shed a few years from our looks is hardly unusual.

Countless creams and treatments pledge anti-ageing benefits, whilst others experiment with various lifestyle modifications to turn back time.

One approach that many believe shaves off several years is achieving a good tan. Bronzed skin can make you appear and feel more vibrant and youthful.

However, one specialist has cautioned against certain tanning techniques and has recommended something far simpler; consuming one specific vegetable, according to The Express.
