Government’s flip-flop insurance policies placing motorists off shopping for electrical automobiles

The Government’s flip-flop policies are putting motorists off buying electric vehicles, the AA warned yesterday.

Its latest UK EV Readiness Index concluded that ‘political uncertainty is putting the brakes on drivers’ willingness to switch’.

The index highlights Rachel Reeves’ controversial Budget proposal to charge electric car owners an annual ‘pay-by-the mile’ tax from April 2028.

Meanwhile, EU plans to row-back on 2035 zero-emissions targets is pressuring ministers to scrap the UK’s Zero Emission mandate. 

The AA said: ‘Drivers are being buffeted by mixed messages and policy reversals.’
