UK’s UAE terror warning: What you need to know

  • The UK Government issued a “high threat” warning for terrorist attacks in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Foreign Office (FO) warns this global threat specifically impacts UK interests and British nationals.
  • Attacks could be indiscriminate, targeting places visited by foreign nationals. Potential targets are broad, including hotels, beaches, shopping centres, military sites, and places of worship.
  • Terrorist groups continue to threaten attacks in the Gulf region, referencing western interests, including against UK citizens. Due to regional tensions, Israeli and Jewish-linked sites are also highlighted as potential targets.
  • The FO has also issued warnings over sexual assault, advising travellers to take care when walking alone or at night and to use reputable taxi companies. The warning notes that UAE law places a high burden of proof on the victim, particularly if the victim had consumed alcohol or knew the alleged attacker.
  • The advisory comes after the Bondi Beach terror attack in Australia, which left 15 victims dead.
  • British nationals in the UAE are advised to maintain a high level of security awareness in public places and stay aware of their surroundings at all times.
