EDEN CONFIDENTIAL: ‘I want subtitles,’ wails Duran star’s LA spouse as she settles in Wiltshire

While Prince Harry waxes lyrical about how much he enjoys living in California with Meghan, another prominent Briton is struggling to convince his own American wife of the benefits of being in Britain.

Eighties pop legend John Taylor has moved back to this country after more than three decades in Los Angeles, but I hear that his wife, Juicy Couture co-founder Gela Nash-Taylor, is struggling to adapt to country life.

Now living full-time at their 15th-century South Wraxall Manor in Wiltshire, Texan-born Gela, 72, who like Meghan is a former actress, admits she has ‘never felt so American’.

She wails: ‘I need subtitles when I’m talking to people.’

The cuisine on offer in the West Country fails to tickle her tastebuds. ‘I don’t miss California yet, but I do miss Mexican food – really good tortilla chips and salsa.’

Here, she says, ‘You’ll get a sausage for dinner. I’m like, ‘No.’ I don’t understand that. I don’t like shepherd’s pie and I don’t like pasties.’

Gela married the heart-throb, 65, whose hits with Duran Duran include Save A Prayer and Hungry Like The Wolf, in 1999 following his split from British photographer and former ‘wild child’ Amanda de Cadenet.

The fashion designer adds she’s been toying with the idea of developing a new accent.

‘I’m obsessed with Manchester,’ Gela says. ‘The girls in Manchester are like Juicy [Couture] girls. They wear really short skirts and too much make-up, but in a really good way. They’re just sassy.

‘There’s something about it up there – it’s freezing cold and they dress like that any time. They don’t seem to know they need a jacket.

‘So I said to John, maybe I should have a Manchester accent? And he was like, no.

‘So I probably will just keep my accent.’

Taylor was Duran Duran’s bass guitarist until 1997, when he left to pursue a solo recording and film career. He rejoined the group when its four other original members – Nick Rhodes, Roger Taylor, Andy Taylor and Simon Le Bon – reunited in 2001.

Kate Winslet shares some rather spicy memories of filming Titanic

Kate Winslet was desperate to ditch the period costumes after making her name in Titanic. So the Oscar winner was surprised by something her daughter, the actress Mia Threapleton, 25, told her.

‘Mia did a show for Apple called The Buccaneers, and she was in a corset all the time,’ Winslet says. ‘I said, ‘Oh, God, I haven’t worn a corset for a really long time.’

‘Of course, she looked extraordinary and loved it. I was, like, ‘You weirdo, loving being in a corset.’ ‘ It brought back ‘traumatic’ memories for Mia’s mother.

‘You try being on a sinking ship in a f***ing corset,’ she says of her best-known role. ‘Nightmare.’

Winslet, 50, is promoting the film Goodbye June, which she has produced, directed and starred in. ‘There are some people who say, ‘Oh, what is it? Her vanity project?’ But you don’t say that about the men. It’s completely crazy.’

Harry Hill lampooned all manner of stars on his clip show TV Burp, with most taking it in good spirits.

All, that is, apart from Lord Sugar, who hated being mocked for his appearances on The Apprentice, and Jamie Oliver, who was prickly when Hill made fun of his cookery shows.

‘Alan Sugar didn’t really like it,’ the comic says. ‘He was a bit humourless. Jamie Oliver got really annoyed once because I perhaps went a bit far on one of his shows.’

Millionaire? That’s normal for Daisy

Daisy Edgar-Jones is set to play Elinor Dashwood in a new adaptation of Sense and Sensibility

Daisy Edgar-Jones, who shot to fame in the BBC’s hit coming-of-age drama Normal People, is enjoying riches that are anything but ordinary.

The Sky executive’s daughter, 27, made £1 million in profits last year at Daisybelle, the private company into which she channels her earnings.

Newly published figures disclose that Daisy, who starred in action film Twisters and is playing Elinor in a forthcoming adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense And Sensibility, is sitting pretty on £1.3million before bills, including £830,000 in cash.

Former Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi has let slip one of the show’s biggest secrets.

The actor, 67, who played the 12th Doctor from 2013 to 2017, says stars cheat by putting their lines up in the Tardis.

‘It was wonderful work, but there wasn’t enough time to learn all the lines,’ he says.

‘So I had to apologise to people in the morning and say, ‘Look, can we stick my lines on the Tardis scanner?’

‘Then I discovered that that was a long-standing tradition among Doctors going back to the beginning. Having bits of your script stuck on the Tardis. But I don’t like that. I’d rather have a grasp of the whole thing.’

Trinny Woodall: I’ve worn out my knees

Trinny Woodall says that being diagnosed with chronic arthritis has made her confront ageing

Trinny Woodall says that being diagnosed with chronic arthritis has made her con

Trinny Woodall once said her daily beauty routine involved spending up to £300 on products to keep her knees looking flawless.

Now, the beauty business owner, 61, has revealed that she has chronic arthritis and faces a double knee replacement. ‘I have always had a bit of a bad knee and I kind of got used to it, and when I ski it doubles in size,’ she says in a video posted online.

A recent scare forced her to act. ‘My knee hurt a bit and I was getting out of the car and it sort of nearly collapsed. So I thought maybe I should go and have an MRI.’

The results startled her surgeon, who told her: ‘I expected you to walk in here crippled.’

The former What Not To Wear presenter believes the condition is hereditary and says the diagnosis has made her confront ageing.

‘My grandmother had very swollen knees, my mother had knee and hip replacements. Am I of this age where we’re talking about knee replacements and things like that?’

Sam Allardyce earned a reputation as a ‘survival specialist’ saving football clubs from being relegated.

Now, the former England manager hopes to ensure his own survival in broadcasting by starting his podcast, No Tippy Tappy Football. ‘

I’ve been in the media for 20 to 30 years,’ explains Allardyce, 71. ‘Unfortunately [that’s] not the case now, due to the fact that there’s a new regime that possibly plumps for a younger person.’

Number 10 Tussle takes sparkle off Idris’ dream

Actor Idris Elba has his own champagne brand called Porte Noire

Actor Idris Elba has his own champagne brand called Porte Noire

Reflecting on a life which has taken him from factory night shifts to global stardom, Idris Elba has observed that champagne was, for him, always ‘something to aspire towards – popping a bottle if you reached a milestone’.

So will the Luther star keep the bubbly on ice this Christmas, even though he now has his own brand, Porte Noire?

I ask because Elba’s plans for a club and restaurant have hit an obstacle. Back in the summer, he set up 10Number10 Ltd with a pal.

But Elba’s application to trademark the name ‘Number 10’ has just been opposed by Direct Wines – part of the Laithwaites empire, which lists a Portuguese red called Number 10.

Elba may note that Laithwaites sponsors the new Bottoms Up! podcast, fronted by… Alan Carr. Traitor!

Why Arabella gave a fast no to ‘keen’ toyboy

Sienna Miller, Sam Taylor Johnson, Madonna and Cher have helped make ‘toyboys’ fashionable in Hollywood, but British comediennne Arabella Weir recoils at the idea of striking up a romance with a much younger man.

‘Somebody much younger was flirting with me a while ago, and I found it a bit embarrassing,’ says The Fast Show star, 68, who split from Jeremy Norton, the father of her two children, more than a decade ago.

‘He was very, very good looking. I said, ‘I could be your mother.’ And he said, ‘Well, it doesn’t bother me if it doesn’t bother you.’ I thought, ‘Ooh, saucy.’

‘Then I thought, ‘It’s going to be exciting for about five minutes, and then I’ll be thinking, oh, I better keep my bra on, and oh, no…’

She adds: ‘He was very keen and that was flattering. But I have to say it made me think there must be something a little bit wrong with him.

‘That sounds woman-hating – it’s not – but if somebody’s in their 20s and they’re fancying someone in their 50s and it turned out he did have a very odd relationship with his mother, quelle surprise.’

(Very) modern manners

He transcended the language barrier as the wordlessly eloquent Mr Bean so it’s little wonder that Rowan Atkinson warns against ‘voice notes’ spewed out on WhatsApp.

‘I try to avoid them if I can,’ says the comedian, 70, who stars in festive Netflix comedy Man Vs. Baby.

He explains that voice notes put ‘the obligation on the listener, because they’re so much easier to make’, whereas, he adds, ‘it’s much easier to read a text than listen to a voice note.

‘So it’s sort of shifting the burden from sender to receiver which is not really fair. It’s so dull.’
