Retailers scent a fragrance bonanza as customers proceed to splash money

Retail sales are down, but one luxury on which shoppers are still splashing the cash is perfume.

Boots, John Lewis and Marks & Spencer report men and women alike are often opting for ‘dupes’ – copies of well-known brands that cost about £10. 

This is not written on the packaging but is revealed on social media, swerving issues over copyright. But shoppers are also buying high-end perfumes with prices as high as £500.

Demand is driven by Gen Z, with Peter Ruis, boss of John Lewis, saying: ‘You have 18-year-olds interested in £150 fragrances.’

John Lewis has expanded the space devoted to perfumes, make-up and skincare, saying it is ‘in a new era of beauty’, as sales of these items have risen by 40 per cent over the past five years.

Its bestsellers include bottles of £127 Chanel No 5, advertised by actress Margot Robbie.

M&S has a Discover Range at £25 for six bottles. Each is said to be a dupe for scents from Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs and others.
