Huge ‘home shaking’ explosion in Methil as HGVs burst into flames at Fife harbour

Residents in Fife have described a house-rattling explosion after several lorries erupted in flames. Fire crews are currently battling a huge inferno in Methil following the enormous blast.

Emergency services rushed to the scene at Methil harbour in Fife this morning (December 21) at around 9:11am after multiple heavy goods vehicles caught fire.

Seven fire engines are presently working to tackle the blaze, with police and ambulance teams also reported to be in attendance.

No casualties have been reported at this time and the cause of the fire remains currently unknown, reports the Daily Record.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) has warned people to stay away from the area and has advised residents to keep their windows and doors shut.

Locals heard a tremendous bang before emergency services started arriving in the vicinity.

Others described spotting the smoke billowing overhead from miles away.

One resident posted a picture online, claiming the explosion “just shook my whole f***ing house”.

They mentioned they could see “police, fire crews, and ambulance on the scene”.

A photograph from the harbour reveals smoke entirely engulfing the site as a solitary firefighter stands courageously directing a hose towards the flames.

Another image captures massive plumes of black smoke rising above the orange fire, with fire officers scattered throughout the vicinity.

Police have confirmed that the road was temporarily shut but has now been reopened.

However, the force has also advised locals to steer clear of the area and keep their windows closed.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland stated: “Emergency services are in attendance following a vehicle fire in the Harbour View area of Methil which was reported around 9.20am on Sunday, December 21. The fire is contained and there are no reported injuries.

“The area between Harbour View and South Street has since reopened, however nearby residents are asked to keep windows and doors closed at this time. Members of the public are asked to avoid the area where possible.”

An SFRS spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 9:11am this morning, Sunday, December 21, to reports of multiple heavy goods vehicles on fire at Methil harbour in Fife.

“We dispatched seven fire appliances to extinguish the blaze. There are no reports of any casualties. Due to the volume of smoke people are asked to avoid the area and locals living in the area are asked to close windows and doors closed.”
