Man Utd participant rankings vs Aston Villa: 4/10s make expensive errors in defeat
Manchester United were beaten 2-1 by Aston Villa in the Premier League and Ruben Amorim’s side missed another chance to enter the top five
Manchester United missed another opportunity to break into the Premier League’s top five, suffering a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa. Despite the loss, Ruben Amorim’s squad earned some respect from a challenging afternoon at Villa Park.
United had the upper hand in the first half, but lax defending from Leny Yoro allowed Morgan Rogers to cut inside and curl a spectacular shot past Senne Lammens. The visitors quickly equalised when Patrick Dorgu dispossessed Matty Cash and Matheus Cunha produced an equally impressive finish.
The match was full of standout moments, with Villa delivering another when Rogers once again found the top corner with a superb strike. Here’s how the United players performed at Villa Park:
Senne Lammens: Couldn’t do much about either goal and had a decent game otherwise. Made a good first-half save from John McGinn, although he could have pushed it further from goal .6.
Leny Yoro: Dreadful for Rogers’ first goal, failing to get anywhere near the talented playmaker. Seemed hesitant to tackle for the second goal. 4.
Ayden Heaven: Held his own against an experienced England international. Had some strong moments against Ollie Watkins and came out on top in that duel. 7.
Luke Shaw: Most of the action took place on the opposite flank. Kept possession well but didn’t have a great deal to do at times. 6.
Diogo Dalot: Provided an option and got involved in the game, but seems more effective on the left from an attacking perspective. Delivered two weak, floating crosses with his left foot. 6.
Manuel Ugarte: Simply not proficient enough in possession to secure a spot in this team. Shifted further forward after Bruno Fernandes’ departure and seemed out of place in that position. 4.
Bruno Fernandes: Appeared in trouble when he halted the game to clutch his hamstring. Managed to take a shot afterwards, but his absence will be a significant loss. 6.
Patrick Dorgu: Grew into the game on his return to the squad and looked more confident than he has in a while. Contributed well to Cunha’s goal and created another opportunity. 7.
Mason Mount: Active throughout the match. Won possession effectively in the first half, set up a chance for Benjamin Sesko and held his own in the second half. 7.
Matheus Cunha: Once again United’s most threatening player and has really stepped up over the past week. Finished his goal nicely but should have bagged a second. 7.
Benjamin Sesko: Squandered two promising chances in the first half and failed to unsettle Victor Lindelof, who usually struggles against physical forwards. 5.
Substitutes:
Lisandro Martinez: Played in an unfamiliar role but started strongly and was comfortable on the ball. Seems a better choice in that position than Ugarte. 7.
Jack Fletcher: Solid in his debut. 6.
Joshua Zirkzee: Unremarkable. 6.
Shea Lacey: Had little time to make a difference but managed a late shot at Martinez. 6.
Subs not used: Altay Bayindir, Tom Heaton, Tyler Fredricson, Tyrell Malacia, Bendito Mantato.
