Donald Trump’s new strategic transfer to take management over Greenland

Donald Trump has appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as US special envoy to Greenland, ramping up his campaign to acquire the mineral-rich Arctic island

Determined Donald Trump has taken fresh measures in his relentless campaign to seize control of Greenland. The US President has consistently argued the move would enhance global security and, in March, he claimed it would be straightforward for his country to obtain the territory.

Nevertheless, Mr Trump has subsequently encountered fierce resistance from Greenland, with its defiant Prime Minister condemning the world leader for his intimidating approach. Yet now, Mr Trump, 79, has named Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry to act as the US special envoy to Greenland, a step he believes will mark significant progress in claiming the island.

Mr Trump declared: “Jeff understands how essential Greenland is to our national security, and will strongly advance our country’s Interests for the safety, security, and survival of our allies, and indeed, the world.”

Mr Landry assumed the governorship in January 2024. His tenure concludes in January 2028.

Calling his new role an honour, he voiced his pride on social media, reports the Mirror. Mr Trump, during the initial months of his White House return, has repeatedly demanded US control over Greenland, and has not dismissed military action to gain command of the mineral-rich, strategically positioned Arctic territory.

However, Greenland, home to fewer than 60,000 inhabitants, remains an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and carries strategic significance for the Kingdom of Denmark, NATO, and the EU. The island maintains progressive social policies, mirroring Denmark with free education and healthcare, whilst being abundant in mineral resources.

Shortly after assuming the role of Prime Minister in the spring, former scientist Jens-Frederik Nielsen declared: “President Trump says that the United States ‘will get Greenland.’ Let me be clear: The United States will not get it.

“We do not belong to anyone else. We decide our own future.”

However, in August, Danish authorities summoned the US ambassador after reports emerged that at least three individuals linked to Mr Trump had conducted covert influence operations in Greenland. Earlier this year, Vice President JD Vance toured a remote US military installation on the island and criticised Denmark for insufficient investment there.

Mr Trump has described Greenland as vital for US security and hasn’t dismissed the possibility of seizing the island through military action, despite Denmark being a NATO partner of the US. Both Denmark and Greenland have stated the island is not available for purchase and denounced reports of US intelligence gathering activities there.

The American pursuit of Greenland faces opposition from Russia and much of Europe. The Denmark Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding Landry’s appointment.

Earlier this month, the Danish Defense Intelligence Service reported that the United States is leveraging its economic might to “assert its will” and brandish military force against both allies and adversaries.
