Heartbreak as devoted mum-of-6 dies after assault as police make ‘homicide’ arrest

Lisa Smith, 33, from Huddersfield, has been described as a ‘loving daughter’ and a ‘devoted mum’ to her six children as police treat her death as murder and arrest a 34-year-old man

Tributes are pouring in for a beloved Huddersfield mum who tragically lost her life following an assault at a property in Almondbury. Lisa Smith, 33, is being remembered as a doting daughter and a dedicated mother to her six children. West Yorkshire Police have now classified Lisa’s death as murder.

Lisa passed away on Sunday evening (December 21) after being attacked in the early hours of Friday, according to police reports. A friend has launched a Go Fund Me campaign to help with funeral costs, already raising almost £10,000, reports Yorkshire Live.

The page states: “We are heartbroken to share that our dear friend Lisa has been tragically taken from us far too soon. Lisa was a loving daughter, a devoted mum, and a loyal friend whose kindness and strength touched everyone who knew her.

“She leaves behind six beautiful children who were her whole world. No words can describe the pain and loss they, and her family, are facing during this unimaginable time.

“We are raising funds to help support Lisa’s mum with funeral expenses and to ease the financial burden of caring for the children as they begin life without their mum. Any contribution, no matter how small, will help give the family some comfort and support during this devastating period.”

West Yorkshire Police confirmed today that Lisa’s death is now being investigated as a murder.

A police spokesperson revealed: “An attack on a woman in the Almondbury area is now being treated as murder following the death of the victim. Enquiries remain ongoing by the Homicide and Enquiry Team into an incident at Fernside Avenue which took place in the early hours of Friday 19 December which resulted in death of Lisa Smith, aged 33.

“Officers were called at 12.26am and on attendance, located Lisa who had suffered very serious head injuries.

“She was taken to hospital in a critical condition, but passed away on Sunday evening. A forensic post mortem will now take place to establish the cause of death.

“Gareth Brook, aged, 34, of Fernside Avenue, had appeared before Leeds Magistrate’s Court on Saturday 20 December charged with Section 18 wounding with intent in relation to the attack on Lisa.

“He was remanded in custody to next appear before Leeds Crown Court on 16 January. Proceedings at court will reflect the outcome of the forensic post mortem.”
