Rotten turkeys spark Christmas fury as Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Lidl and Asda are blamed
Once again, rancid turkeys and inedible beef have ruined Christmas dinners up and down the country, as the yearly tradition of sharing rotten meats from supermarkets on social media is back again
Christmas is a year of precious traditions, and that includes the annual complaints of festive dinners ruined due to rancid turkeys.
Social media has once again been filling up with hungry Brits raging that the meats they ordered in their deliveries or bought in-store, are not up to their desired Christmas standards. Once again, many angry shoppers posted their grim birds on Twitter/X, claiming that their festive meals were now utterly ruined because of their local supermarket.
It comes after England’s best butcher shares his top tips for cooking the perfect turkey this year. One posted, tagging Tesco in their complaint: “Just opened the turkey I ordered & it has MOULD on it & the smell is awful, it’s rotten.
“Thank you for ruining Xmas, I don’t have a back up, so it’s just stuffing & pigs in blankets for us, if they aren’t off too. Never again. Omg the smell is everywhere, need candles ASAP.”
The X post was accompanied by an image of a very odd-looking pale turkey with dark spots. It also looks unappetisingly slimy. Another customer was also left upset by the state of Tesco’s gammon joint this year and wrote: “Collected order 23 December.
“Just noticed date is 24 December and it smells! Cooking this for xmas dinner!! Disgusted.”
Meanwhile, another customer was left upset by the state of their turkey from Sainsbury’s. They wrote: :Thank you @sainsburys a rotten turkey from your longwater Norwich store, opened it up to a Christmas morning stench! I’m certainly gonna “taste the difference” with this!!!!!”
The poster also shared a photo of their ruined turkey, which had a ‘sell-by date’ of December 27. The bird itself looked very sad, the colours off-putting and the meat clearly inedible.
Another upset customer from Sainsburys wrote: “Hey @sainsburys am I going to get a reply? Christmas has been ruined by this turkey! It has left the family in tears because of the smell of the rotten turkey.”
It’s not just turkeys that have ruined Christmas. One social media user was looking forward to a hefty portion of beef on Christmas Day, bought from Lidl GB. They shared, accompanied with a photo of their spoilt meat: “Thanks @LidlGB our beef is rotten for Xmas day . Not good.
Asda also left customers’ dinner plans in ruin. One user bought a Turkey, with an expiry date set at December 26. However, they shared the rancid-looking bird, and posted: “Merry Christmas , bought from Asda Dumbarton.”
When the rotten birds were put to the retail giant Sainsburys, a spokesperson told the Daily Star: “We will be contacting these customers who received a turkey that does not meet our usual high standards to say how sorry we are for this experience and reassure them that we’re looking into how this may have happened.”
An Asda spokesperson was also apologetic, and said: “We’ve sold hundreds of thousands of turkeys this Christmas and apologise that this customer’s turkey did not meet our usual high standards. We would encourage any customer who is not satisfied with their turkey to contact our customer service team.”
The Daily Star also contacted Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Lidl GB for a response.
