A car crash on Christmas Eve has claimed the lives of five family members, including two young children.
The tragic accident occurred on the SP-331 motorway in Sao Paulo, Brazil, when the family’s vehicle was struck by a BMW, causing it to erupt in flames. Luís Carlos de Souza Pinheiro, 36, his partner Paula Daniela Martins, 45, their 12-year-old and four-year-old children, and Paula’s sister Dulcinéia Lozano all perished at the scene.
The BMW driver, who sustained minor injuries, was taken to the Santa Casa de Pirajuí hospital. He alleged that the family’s car was stationary on the carriageway with its lights off, but refused to provide a breathalyser sample.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing. The family was well-known in the local community, with Paula famous for selling cheeses and her sister Dulcinéia working as a preschool teacher. Luís Carlos, affectionately known as ‘Batore’, often shared heartwarming family photos on social media, including pictures of the children horseback riding, reports the Mirror.
The Iacanga Municipal Council, where the family resided, has expressed its deepest condolences and declared three days of mourning. A statement on Facebook read: “The Municipal Council of Iacanga expresses deep sorrow for the death of municipalities that occurred on the night of December 24, 2025, a fact that deeply moved the entire community.”
Tributes poured in from local residents on the post. One message read: “Sadness on top of sadness. May God have mercy on us all. They have fulfilled their legacies. May they rest in peace.”
Another local resident shared their condolences, writing: “So sad to see a family lost their lives in this way. May God receive them with open arms.”
A third commenter left a heartfelt message, expressing hope and support for those grieving: “May God receive them in his mercy and may the Holy Spirit of God comfort their friends and family. This road has claimed many lives! !”
Following the devastating Christmas Eve crash, a massive emergency response effort was launched, involving the Military Highway Police, two fire engines, multiple recovery vehicles, and diversions along the affected section of the SP-331 motorway near Balbinos. These measures remained in place until 6am on Christmas Day.
