UK snow maps present 10-inch blizzard may batter UK in days

Weather maps suggest the UK could be in for a wintry blast in just days, with some areas potentially seeing heavy snow – and one region could face as much as 10 inches

Brits are bracing for a cold snap as blizzards are predicted to sweep across the country in just a few days.

While a White Christmas may have eluded us, snowfall could be on the cards post-festivities. Weather maps from WX Charts suggest that parts of the UK could be hit with snow, with one region potentially seeing up to 10 inches of the white stuff. Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland and northern England are expected to bear the brunt of these flurries. The weather maps indicate that this heavy snowfall and chilly weather could arrive by January 8.

The WX Charts maps, created on December 24, also forecast that the Midlands and southern England could experience snowy conditions. Snowfall has been predicted as far south as Devon, Cornwall and even Greater London.

However, the maps suggest that Ross and Cromarty, along with Invernessshire, could be the hardest hit by this potential snowfall. These areas could see as much as 10.2 inches (26cm) fall in a single day, according to the maps, reports the Mirror.

Aberdeenshire could also be hit by up to 5.5 inches (14cm) of snow on that day.

The map also indicates that other parts of the country could be blanketed by snow. Areas around Norwich could see up to 3.9 inches (10cm) of snowfall.

Despite these forecasts from WX Charts, the Met Office has offered a more cautious outlook for the second week of the new year.

The Met Office’s long-range forecast for December 30 to January 8 has indicated that certain parts of the UK may experience rainfall, whilst cautioning of “more changeable conditions” as the week progresses.

The forecast stated: “High pressure is likely to dominate across the UK through to the end of the year, centred to the west or northwest over the North Atlantic.

“This will likely maintain relatively settled conditions at first, but with a little light rain or drizzle in places and a few showers possible along some coasts exposed to the northerly wind. Around the turn of the year, high pressure is likely to shift a little farther away from the UK, allowing a greater chance of more changeable conditions to develop.

“This will bring an increased risk of some rain or showers at times which, with cold air close to the UK, may bring some wintry hazards to some places. Temperatures will probably be near or slightly below average for this period overall.”

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a yellow cold health alert running from 6pm on Thursday through to noon on December 27 for south-west England.
