Barmy guests slam one among UK’s most well-known castles – for being like a citadel

Conwy Castle in North Wales is steeped in history and grandeur, but some visitors have hit out at the beauty spot — with some going as far as to whinge about the lack of photo ops

Whingeing visitors to one of the UK’s most famous castles have moaned about winding stairs and too-high battlements. One person said 13th-century Conwy Castle in North Wales a location for HBO’s House of Dragons show as a “death trap”, while another said there was no disabled access to the ancient monument.

Yet another said the “windows” in the towers, which turned out to be arrow slits, were too narrow for photo opportunities. The travellers have taken to TripAdvisor to share their bizarre moans about the ruined fortress.

Constructed under the orders of King Edward I and built between 1283 and 1289, Conwy Castle was one of an ‘iron ring’ of strongholds commissioned to establish the king’s dominance over Wales. But the history of the pile is lost on some visitors.

Sonia said: “Conwy Castle has NO access for disabled. The only access is via 15 stone steps so unless you’re able bodies and sure footed you cannot go in.”

Simon said: “People should be warned in advance if you don’t like heights, save your money. Obviously, it’s a medieval castle, so uneven paths, steps, etc, are normal.

But apart from the wall walk which is very high with a small rail (not suitable for small children) there are basically walls to look at inside, which are the same as you can look at outside for free.” Another said: “Hoards of visitors clambering up precarious narrow parapets and towers on steep steps and ramparts with railings with half-metre gaps (this site is an accident waiting to happen).”

Yet another added: “Don’t go up the towers if you are scared of heights. Place is a death trap.”

MWK said: “We are not steady on our feet and struggled over uneven polished stones and watched families with pushchairs and wheelchairs really struggle, more so walking back up the incline.” One visitor said: “I heard an American tourist complaining about the windows being too narrow for photos — they are arrow slits.”

In the wake of the slew of comments, one person named Spikeyd stormed onto the review page to hit back at the silly reasons to mark the castle down. They fumed: “There are some idiots on here writing reviews.

“A — This is an old castle and is going to have narrow staircases and precipitous walls. B — Imagine the cost of cleaning all the bird faeces and picking up the rubbish that ignorant people drop down the bottom of the towers…so I think the price was pretty fair.

“C — Don’t go if you are scared of heights (it’s a 13th-century castle designed to defend the river and protect the people). D —Why don’t people read about about stuff before they visit.

“E. Young children, I have taken ours to castles but am aware that I will have to look after them with reference to castle walls etc. You’re the parent you look after your kids!”
