In a recent update, police in Makun, Ogun State, Nigeria have confirmed that boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been hospitalised following a fatal road accident that claimed the lives of two others.
Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter, also confirmed to The Mirror that Joshua was en route to the hospital but is okay. Local news source Punch reported that police spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi provided an update after the crash.
He stated: “Two [have] died, while Joshua and one other have been hospitalised and are receiving treatment at a hospital that would not be disclosed.”
It had previously been reported that the driver of the car Joshua was travelling in, as well as the passenger seated next to him, had tragically lost their lives.
Their vehicle, believed to be a Lexus Jeep, collided with a stationary lorry.
The BBC also confirmed they received a statement from the Ogun State Police Command verifying that two individuals had died in the accident.
Horrifying images of the aftermath were shared on social media, including Joshua, who was not wearing a top, in his Lexus Jeep looking dazed.
According to local reports, four people were inside the Lexus at the time, while his security followed in a separate vehicle.
Reports add that rescue efforts began immediately, with eyewitnesses flagging down passing motorists to assist. And local outlets added that officers from the Nigerian Federal Road Safety Corps arrived within minutes to secure the area.
Footage, which was shared on social media, appears to show Joshua being helped out of the car before he is offered aid by bystanders who were quick to the scene to help.
Joshua was then filmed wincing in pain before he was seen speaking to officials.
The camera then pans in the horrifying clip, which goes on to show the wreckage and images of the victims of the crash on the ground.
