Enzo Maresca missed his post-match press conference following Chelsea’s draw with Brighton after falling ill.
The Blues played out a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday evening. However, after the game, the Italian was unable to speak to the press with suggestions he’s contracted a virus.
Instead, Maresca’s assistant Willy Caballero stepped in to speak to the journalists at Stamford Bridge. Caballero, who had been in the dugout over the weekend as Maresca served a touchline ban, said: “He didn’t feel well in the last two days. He had a temperature two days ago.
“After the game, he went to the changing room and he asked me to replace him because he didn’t feel well.”
When asked if he’d be back for the Manchester City game, Caballero said: “I don’t know. I just wish for the recovery of Enzo. I believe in one or two days, he will be okay.”
David Brooks had given the Cherries an early lead before Cole Palmer slotted in a penalty before Enzo Fernandez’s finish turned the game inside the first half.
But there was still time in the first half for Justin Kluivert to level the scores again.
When asked about the current spell Chelsea find themselves in, Caballero said: “Yes, of course. He is dealing well because he is very professional. He loves to train, loves to coach, so he’s an example for me, for all of the staff, and yes, we didn’t do as well in December as we expected.
“We go in January to start the year, to improve and to find the points that can make us achieve our targets.”
Chelsea’s next game is against Manchester City on Sunday, January 4.
