What’s the largest challenge Keir Starmer should tackle in 2026? Vote in our ballot
Prime Minister Keir Starmers returns to a bumper in-tray after the Christmas break – and we want to know your views on what his top priorities should be in 2026
Keir Starmer seeks to turn the page on a turbulent year as he heads into 2026.
After enjoying a rare break over Christmas at Chequers with his family, the Prime Minister returns to a bumper in-tray ahead of what promises to be another massive year in politics. Make-or-break elections in Scotland, Wales and local councils in England will be a pivotal moment for Mr Starmer, who is grappling with questions over his leadership.
Labour has been lagging in the polls as it faces pressure from Nigel Farage’s Reform on the right and the resurgent Green Party on the left. Mr Starmer has made it clear that fixing the cost of living crisis is his top priority as he battles to restore his party’s fortunes.
He told us in November that he was going nowhere. Asked if he would lead Labour into the next election, he said: “Yes, I will. Let me be really clear – every minute that’s not spent talking about and dealing with the cost of living is a minute wasted of the political work of this Government.”
He added: “I remain utterly focused on what matters to me most, which is bearing down on the cost of living and making people feel better off. I’m very conscious of the fact that people want to get on in life, they want to progress, they want more money in their pocket to do the things that matter to them.”
A number of other issues are also expected to dominate the headlines. Fixing the NHS was one of Labour’s big election promises – and the PM will want to make serious progress on driving down waiting lists. Controversies over the plan to scrap jury trials and overcrowding in prisons are likely to flare up
Immigration remains a key concern. The Government is battling to end small boat crossings by smashing the criminal networks smuggling desperate people to Britain. Ending the use of asylum hotels will also be critical.
The PM will also have to walk a tightrope as he tries to stop Donald Trump from selling out Ukraine in peace talks with Russia. Britain’s defence has been in the headlines as military chiefs warn of the threat from Vladimir Putin to people in this country. The future of Gaza remains uncertain and Palestinians continue to suffer despite the fragile peace.
Labour has an abundance of issues to tackle in 2026 – but which one do you consider as most important? Vote in our poll HERE to have your say.
