Female jail officer accused of ‘intimate relationships’ with prisoners
A prison officer accused of smuggling drugs, laundering money, and having “intimate relationships with prisoners” could soon trade her badge for a cell as she faces explosive misconduct charges
A prison officer could see her uniform swapped from guard to inmate and face years behind bars after she was accused of inappropriate relationships with prisoners and other serious crimes. The female guard allegedly smuggled drugs and tobacco into her work place, in addition to laundering money, a court heard.
29-year-old Kayleigh Robson has been reportedly accused of engaging in inappropriate relationships with inmates at HMP Peterborough over a nine-month span, according to court allegations. According to recent reports, the now ex-prison officer appeared at Cambridge Crown Court facing charges of misconduct in a public office.
Robson also reportedly faces claims she smuggled cannabis and tobacco into the privately run Category B prison.
Additionally, Robson has been accused of becoming involved in money laundering. The former prison guard, from Grantham, Lincolnshire, reportedly pleaded not guilty to all charges.
During the brief hearing, the mother-of-one reportedly spoke only to confirm her name, date of birth, and pleas. Prosecutors allege she “wilfully misconducted herself” in her official role by “having intimate relationships with prisoners” between June 1, 2020, and February 28, 2021, the Daily Mail reported.
It is further claimed that, from July 23, 2020, to April 19, 2021, she reportedly conspired with others to smuggle cannabis and tobacco into the prison, and “became concerned” in a money laundering scheme involving bank transfers. According to the Daily Mail, the full misconduct charge reads: “At Peterborough while acting as a public officer, namely prison officer, wilfully and without reasonable excuse or justification misconducted yourself in a way which amounted to an abuse of the public’s trust in the office holder by having intimate relationships with prisoners.”
Robson reportedly appeared in the dock alongside three men, with two further defendants due to appear at a later date. Adam Hussain, 28, Ashley Neal, 30, and Roy Shalliker, 67, all denied conspiring to bring contraband into HMP Peterborough, as per the Daily Mail.
Both Hussain and Neal also pleaded not guilty to money laundering charges. All defendants, including Robson, were granted bail, with a two-week trial scheduled for April 2027 at Huntingdon Crown Court. Innapropriate relationships between officers and inmates are not as rare as one might think.
Just last month, a prison officer who embarked on an improper relationship with a convict was locked up. Megann Gibson, 26, had sexual communications with gangster Ryan Horan whilst employed at West Yorkshire’s Wealstun jail.
She then bombarded the lag’s mother with more than 900 messages in a desperate attempt to maintain her romance, a court was told. The disgraced officer also reportedly permitted the prisoner access to forbidden sections of the Category C resettlement facility, whilst also visiting his home.
Gibson, from Leeds, West Yorkshire admitted misconduct in a public office and cannabis possession. She was jailed for 12 months at Leeds Crown Court this week.
The court heard that in just five months of working at the Category C resettlement prison, her behaviour triggered 102 anti-corruption intelligence reports. The red flags equated to almost one every working day, the Daily Star previously reported.
Prosecutor Louise Pryke told the court: “The conversations were of a highly sexual nature and extremely graphic. Some of the calls lasted up to an hour.
“During the calls, they expressed their love for each other, discussed getting married, having children and life after Ryan Horan got out of prison. Ryan Horan also wrote the defendant highly sexual letters, which were found in her bedroom on her arrest.
“The defendant also became heavily involved with Ryan Horan’s mother, visiting her to her home in Sheffield and exchanging over 900 WhatsApp messages with her.”
