A predatory teacher has been permanently banned from the classroom after being jailed for having sex with pupils, including one with whom she became pregnant and later gave birth to his child
The maths educator’s actions were branded as “fundamentally incompatible” with teaching by authorities. Rebecca Joynes, a 31-year-old maths teacher from Salford, Greater Manchester, taught at a school in Tameside, also in Greater Manchester.
However, as a result of her sickening actions, the UK’s Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) has published a ruling prohibiting her from working in a classroom again. Joynes is now not only banned from the profession, but also a convicted criminal with multiple counts relating to underage students.
According to recent reports, Joynes is currently behind bars for six and a half years after being found guilty of six charges of sexual activity with a child involving two teenage boys. The TRA panel was told that the maths teacher had “groomed” both boys from the age of 15 and had shown “scant regard for the seriousness of her actions”.
Joynes reportedly lost her job for gross misconduct in July 2022 after her first court appearance. During her 2024 trial at Manchester Crown Court, it emerged that she was 28 when she started sending flirty messages to a 15-year-old, known as Boy A, on social media.
Rather than shutting down inappropriate comments, Joynes would “laugh off” the behaviour and went on to secretly meet up with him, the BBC reported. On one occasion, Boy A told his mother he was staying at a friend’s house, but instead Joynes picked him up, took him shopping at the Trafford Centre, and bought him a £350 Gucci belt before taking him back to her flat in Salford where they had sex.
It is reported that the next day, Boy A’s mother spotted a love bite on his neck, confronted the school, and called the police, resulting in Joynes’ arrest. While on police bail and banned from contacting anyone under 18, Joynes began grooming a second 15-year-old, Boy B, via Snapchat.
The two reportedly had regular unprotected sex at her flat, which led to Joynes becoming pregnant and later giving birth to Boy B’s child.
Boy B told the court he was “coerced, controlled, manipulated, sexually abused, and mentally abused”, adding: “I will forever be Rebecca’s victim and forever linked to her through our child”.
The court also heard that Joynes’ baby was removed from her care within 24 hours of birth in early 2024.
The TRA cited Judge Kate Cornell’s sentencing remarks from July 2024: “You showed breathtaking gall in deliberately and knowingly breaching police bail conditions with almost identical offending behaviour as that you were on bail for.”
Moreover, the TRA recommended, and the Secretary of State for Education confirmed, that Joynes be permanently banned from teaching, with her conduct described as “fundamentally incompatible with working as a teacher”.
