Man Utd information: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s supervisor imaginative and prescient emerges amid £30m switch replace

Manchester United are seeking a new head coach for the remainder of the season following Ruben Amorim’s sacking, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer favourite for the interim role

Following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim earlier this week, Manchester United’s primary concern is appointing a new head coach for the rest of the season.

However, potential transfer opportunities may also arise. United splashed out over £200million in the summer to bolster Amorim’s squad. But with the Portuguese manager no longer at the helm and an interim replacement due to step in, it’s likely that new targets will be evaluated.

Regardless of whether United decide to bring in fresh talent this month, there’s no denying that the squad needs some attention. A host of players are being linked with a move to Old Trafford, and there’s been an update on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s possible arrival. Here’s all the latest news from Old Trafford.

Solskjaer’s long-term vision

Solskjaer is tipped to take over at United until the season’s end. The Norwegian has been in discussions with the club, alongside Michael Carrick and Ruud van Nistelrooy, after his departure in 2021.

It’s believed United are eager to appoint an interim head coach for the remainder of the 2025/26 season, with a permanent appointment lined up for the new campaign.

However, according to the Guardian, Solskjaer harbours ambitions to secure the role on a full-time basis, should he perform well.

Back in December 2018, Solskjaer was appointed as caretaker manager following Jose Mourinho’s sacking. During his 19-game stint, he secured 14 victories, pushing United into a top-four race and orchestrating a memorable comeback against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

He got the job on a permanent basis and then led United to two top‑three finishes, in 2020 and 2021, and the 2021 Europa League final, which was lost on penalties against Villarreal. A dire run of form the following season including a thumping defeat to Liverpool led to his sacking in late November, with the side seventh.

The truth about Rashford’s return

Marcus Rashford isn’t expected to make a comeback to United after being ousted from the club by Amorim last summer.

The England international, along with team-mates Jadon Sancho, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund, were all allowed to leave on loan after falling out of favour with Amorim, reports the Mirror.

However, according to the Sun, the decision to loan out these players was approved by those above Amorim, and there’s no anticipated reversal of these decisions now that United are set to appoint a new head coach.

Rashford spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Barcelona, where he scored seven goals and provided eight assists. The Spanish club has the option to sign him permanently for £30m in the summer, a move that is widely expected to take place.

The report suggests that it’s highly unlikely Rashford will make a return to Old Trafford, regardless of who is at the helm.
