UK faculties closed as Storm Goretti to deliver 8 inches of snow in -12C chilly snap
Storm Goretti is expected to bring an arctic blast to the United Kingdom as once again schools across the country have been affected by snow and plummeting temperatures
Schools across the UK have remained close today as weather warnings have been extended into the weekend with Storm Goretti expected to bring eight inches of snow in some parts of the UK.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and the Met Office have extended the duration of the current amber cold-health alert with regions of England will remain under an amber alert until 12pm on Sunday (January 11).
Dr Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at UKHSA, said: “The current cold snap is now expected to last at least until this weekend according to Met Office forecasts, and we know that prolonged exposure to low temperatures can have a severe impact on people’s health, especially if they’re older or have serious health conditions.
“That’s why we’re urging people to check in on friends, family and neighbours who may be more vulnerable to the cold and make sure that they’re able to keep themselves warm while this period of cold lasts.”
So far this morning, three schools in Northern Ireland and multiple schools in Scotland, particularly in Aberdeenshire, Moray and Aberdeen will be shut on Wednesday.
According to the BBC, around 65 schools in the Highlands are also closed.
Around 350 were reportedly closed across Scotland yesterday (January 6).
