Donald Trump invitations Colombian President to the White House after days of threats

Donald Trump has carried out a massive U-turn and invited the Colombian President to the White House.
The US President’s invitation to Gustavo Petro comes just days after saying an operation targeting Colombia “sounds good”, following America’s capture of Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro. He claims to have had a friendly phone call with Petro, who he said had “called to explain the situation of drugs and other disagreements that we have had”.
Trump added in a post that he appreciated the Colombian president’s “tone” days after warning him to “watch his ass”. He had previously said that “Colombia is very sick too”.
The Orange Manbaby also previously accused former guerilla fighter Petro of “making cocaine and selling it to the United States”. Trump then added: “He’s not going to be doing it very long, let me tell you.”
Asked whether US intervention was possible aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Mr Trump responded: “Sounds good to me.”
In response, Petro warned that Colombia would “take up arms” if the US military launched action against his country as it did in Venezuela. He said: “If you detain a president whom much of my people want and respect, you will unleash the people’s jaguar.”
Backtracking, Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform to describe his conversation with Petro as a “Great Honour”. He said US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Colombian counterpart would make arrangements for Petro to travel to Washington.
Colombia is a key hub in the region’s cocaine trade and also has vast oil reserves as well as producing gold, silver, emeralds, platinum and coal.
The US has already implemented economic measures, such as slashing aid to Colombia, due to ongoing disputes. It has also been conducting military strikes on alleged drug vessels in the Caribbean and Pacific since September 2025.
