Kate Middleton makes hospital go to only a day earlier than her forty fourth birthday

The Princess of Wales, Kate, made an unexpected appearance the day before her birthday, joining Prince William in a visit to express their support for NHS staff in London.

Kate joined William, who was initially scheduled to attend alone, at Charing Cross Hospital on Thursday for their first public engagement of 2026.

Turning 44 on Friday, the princess “wanted to join her husband to show her support for the NHS and to thank the teams at Charing Cross for their efforts” during a challenging winter period, according to Kensington Palace.

This comes just days ahead of the first anniversary of the princess’s announcement at the beginning of 2025 that she was in remission from cancer.

The Royal couple met with volunteers from the Imperial Health Charity, who work tirelessly to enhance patient care and alleviate pressure on the broader workforce.

One volunteer, who assists individuals undergoing chemotherapy, discussed her role with William and Kate.

Speaking about patients and visitors, she told the couple: “People will sit there for hours.”

To which Kate responded, “I know” before touching William’s shoulder and adding, “you know”.

Kate was last seen publicly on Christmas Day when she, along with William and their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, joined the rest of the Royal family for their traditional walk to church at Sandringham in Norfolk.

The couple are looking forward to a new beginning in 2026 following Kate’s battle with cancer, having made a significant move last autumn from Adelaide Cottage to their new residence, the Grade II-listed eight-bedroom Forest Lodge in Windsor Great Park.

William and Kate serve as joint patrons of NHS Charities Together, and according to the Palace, the engagement was arranged to “acknowledge the incredible work of NHS staff over a difficult winter period”.

The Royal pair surprised healthcare workers during their tea break, engaging them in conversation about the challenges they faced during the winter virus season.

Kate was sporting a fashionable burgundy trouser suit with a matching blouse. William donned a v-neck jumper over his shirt and tie, complemented by his suit jacket.

Staff were congregated in a break room funded by Imperial Health Charity, a member of the umbrella group NHS Charities Together, which supports all five hospitals under the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust through grants, arts programmes, and volunteering initiatives.

William and Kate subsequently participated in a roundtable discussion with NHS charity chief executives, trustees, policymakers, and philanthropists, deliberating on the role of philanthropy within the NHS.

The couple assumed patronage of NHS Charities Together in 2020, amidst the peak of the Covid pandemic.

The organisation represents over 220 NHS charities affiliated with all NHS Trusts and Health Boards across the UK.
