The Ashes LIVE: Australia win the fifth Test to take the Ashes 4-1 as Khawaja cries, an England star loses his thoughts and drama strikes late on a wild day on the SCG

Travis Head sledges Jamie Smith in the aftermath

The player of the match holed out with a rash shot that saw him caught for 29 from the bowling of Josh Tongue.

As the Aussies celebrated at the SCG, he couldn’t resist having a go at England keeper Jamie Smith, whose awful shot to get out to a wet-lettuce ‘bouncer’ from Marnus Labuschagne left fans and experts aghast.

‘I thought, I wonder what it’d be like sitting in their dressing room sometimes, and playing a pretty rank shot,’ Head told the ABC.

‘I’ll have a beer with Jamie Smith later and we can compare whose was worse.’

Smith and Labuschagne: Just a couple of cricket nerds

While the rest of the Aussies celebrated the Test victory, Marnus and the skipper were running through their technique with the bat…

Steve Smith speaks

The pretty reserved stand-in skipper said ‘it was nice to finish on a high note’ in a masterpiece of understatement.

Asked about the stars who produced when it really counted, he said everyone in the side did it at different times.

‘Alex, Travis and Starcy were obviously huge standouts, but other guys stood up at different times.

‘That’s what makes a good team: trusting each other, guys standing up in different scenarios and situations.

‘Everyone did their job.’

Class from Ben Stokes

He gave absolutely everything he could this series and broke down yesterday morning. Stokes paid respect to an ‘incredible’ Aussie team as he spoke to Isa Guha during the presentation, which was thronged by a huge crowd of fans.

‘It was a great game to be involved in … Obviously Test matches that go to the fifth day and have a bit of drama there at the end is always something great to be a part of.

‘I think we should’ve got 100 more and we allowed Australia to probably get 100 too many in their first innings with the bat.

‘If you look at 200 runs on a fifth [day] on that type of wicket, we would’ve been in the box seat.’

Player of the series goes to Mitchell Starc

There has been a bit of debate over whether he or Head deserved the gong, but you can’t argue with the decision, even though he had a quiet Test by the lofty standards he set throughout the rest of the series.

Starc wasn’t just dominant with the ball, he also crushed England with the bat in Brisbane.

He’s almost 36 and has stamped himself as one of the most amazing athletes in Australia with his durability as well as his skill, sending it down above 140kmh from the get-go in every match as he proved crucial in the absences of Cummins and Hazlewood.

And the player of the match is…

Travis Head, who could only have got it by a whisker over Bethell and Joe Root, who also excelled in this Test.

Khawaja’s kind words for England on a monumental day for him

‘It’s what I love about cricket, I said thank you to Stokesy for it, very humbling,’ Khawaja has just said.

‘Cricket is a beautiful game … it’s always bringing people together.

‘When I came to Australia I couldn’t speak a word of English … it broke down all the barriers.’

Asked how he felt as he walked off for the final time, he laughed and said, ‘A little bit of annoyance because I chopped on.’

The Mail’s cricket correspondent, Lawrence Booth, saw Khawaja in tears from his spot at the SCG, and the veteran confirmed he couldn’t contain himself after the win.

‘I was trying to act cool,’ he told Fox.

‘But the whole Test match I found it really hard to control my emotions.

‘It’s something I’ll cherish for the rest of my life, being able to finish here at the SCG.’

Let the celebrations begin

Khawaja emerges from the sheds to another huge cheer as he and the rest of the team take to the field to shake hands with the Lions stars and their staffers.

England walk over to the Barmy Army, who sing their signature song as they clap the players and the players applaud back.

Pat Cummins is out there, ditto Nathan Lyon. But Khawaja got the most attention – all of it kind – from England, after their classy honour guard when he walked out.

Australia win by five wickets and retain the Ashes 4-1!

Carey blocks the first from Jacks.

The next is a four, a lovely cover drive by Carey,

and Australia win by five wickets!

Australia just three runs away

Single, dot, single, four from this Carse over so far.

Green has steered it to deep back point to leave the Aussies needing seven to take the Test.

Carse sends down a great bouncer that hits the Aussie on his left shoulder as he takes his eye off it.

Another four from Green, same spot as the first one. Three runs to go…

Australia 5-147, 14 needed for victory

Four dots from Jacks, then one rears up on Green, and it runs to fine leg for three byes. Massive overspin there.

Australia 5-144, need 17 to win

Alex Carey and Cameron Green have taken a year off the lives of any Aussie watching this.

Like we said, it’s the nervous 90s for the Aussies and they aren’t exactly dealing with the pressure very well.

Absolutely no need to be chasing any run that isn’t blindingly safe.
