Bakery bandit steals a lot Greggs meals that bin bag splits – ‘muppet’

The thief was captured on smartphone footage grabbing numerous hot and cold products from the shelves of a Greggs bakery in Coventry as locals fumed about the common occurrence

A shameless crook shoved so much Greggs ‘ food in a bin bag that it split before walking out without paying. The hooded thief stole 19 items in total and first grabbed five hot food products.

The crook then swiped seven things from the chilled fridge, which contained sandwiches. They then pinched four drinks before going back to take three more hot items.

Because there was so much in the black bin bag, it split, and some of the goods fell on the floor. A customer filmed the brazen act on their mobile phone in a one-minute-and-three-second video.

The thief then left the Greggs in Jubilee Crescent, Coventry, without paying on January 7. Local, Ian Arnold, said: “Why would anyone shoplift in Greggs?”

Peter Reid fumed: “People should start to steal from the thieves. Give the property back. When’s it going to stop?”

Benjamin Linus said: “I’m surprised Greggs hasn’t gone bankrupt.” Steve Smith added: “What has happened to this country?”

Rosemarie Jarvis suggested: “Lock the door.” Chris added: “The bag split, what a f****** muppet.”

Greggs and West Midlands Police have been approached for comment.

It follows a similar raid on the same Greggs last month. Then, a bold-as-brass man scooped up ten boxes of grub before walking out without paying.

There has been a sharp rise in shoplifting, particularly from Greggs, in the last two years. Shops up and down the UK have been targeted.

It comes as Greggs has revealed that the rise of people using weight loss jabs has “no doubt” caused a dent in its profits. Appetite supressing drugs have led to people looking for “smaller portions” and focusing on “protein and fibre” and much healthier options, Greggs CEO, Roisin Currie has said.

There is a “broader health trend” emerging in the food market, she said. The company – which has previously had big hits with its vegan sausage roll and vegan steak bake offerings – has reported low profits and a muted forecast for the upcoming year.

However, the company is aiming to meet the new demands as people move away from high-fat pasties, cakes and pastries and has said it is rolling out smaller portions and protein-rich products.
