EFL stadium listed on Rightmove as punter agrees to purchase unit for cut price value
An EFL club’s home stadium recently appeared on a Rightmove listing, which may have taken some football fans by surprise when looking for a new office space online
Rotherham United fans may have been shocked to see the New York Stadium listed on Rightmove. A unit at the ground was recently made available to rent, and a deal has been agreed.
Rotherham are currently struggling in League One. Matt Hamshaw’s side sit in the relegation zone, four points from safety after 24 games. The Millers finished 13th in the third tier last season.
Images of the New York Stadium appeared in a Rightmove listing, and a deal has been struck. However, the team will still play their home games at the New York Stadium as the let only applies to a commercial unit within the stadium.
The listing describes the property as a “two-storey commercial unit offering suitability for a variety of uses including offices, retail and leisure”. A fee of £5,000 per month has been agreed for the 6,188sqft space, which was available immediately.
The deal has been overseen by Commercial Property Rotherham. The unit’s key features are said to include a flexible open-plan layout and a convenient location.
The two-floor property still features images of Rotherham players on the outside windows. Inside, the space follows the curve of the stadium, nestled within the club’s home.
The Rightmove listing reads: “The New York Community Stadium has become an iconic landmark development scheme within both Rotherham and South Yorkshire.
“The Community Stadium scheme provides not only sporting facilities and a capacity for approximately 12,000 supporters, but also provides for a further 30,000 sq.ft (2,787.09 sq.m) of commercial accommodation which is capable of being utilised for a range of purposes including retail, leisure, office and medical.
“Of the commercial accommodation, approximately 15,500 sq.ft of accommodation has been let. The remaining vacant units are at ground floor level and are suitable for a range of business and leisure purposes.”
The Millers rent the AESSEAL New York Stadium from R U Estates Limited, owned by the family of club chairman Tony Stewart. However, the Rotherham Advertiser recently reported that the team’s chief operating officer Paul Douglas believes both would be involved in any future sale.
”I’m sure that Tony’s got a great affection for the stadium, having been involved in its inception and its building and having had some great experiences in it,” Douglas said. “But, at the end of the day, clubs and stadiums go together.
“If you’re saying to me, could I envisage a situation where the club was sold and not the stadium, I suppose I could. But I would imagine that, while there might be two separate negotiations, the sale of both would run hand in hand.”
