Major excessive avenue chain set to close 88 shops this yr – see full listing
A much-loved chain of charity shops has delivered another hammer blow to the UK’s high streets with its planned closure of 88 of its 600 stores this year – although it also has good news to share
Tough times for retailers and shoppers are looming in the new year as a popular chain has announced a wave of closures that could continue into 2027.
High streets are already braced to lose 150 shops this year amid hikes in National Insurance and the minimum wage, along with fears over business rates and the switch to online shopping. Banks, fashion outlets, and a host of other businesses are already poised to shut up shop as household names and beloved local favourites face a storm of challenges.
Now Cancer Research UK, a favourite high street charity shop with 600 shops, has announced that 88 of its stores will shut this year. The chain’s two-year strategy could also bring further closures in 2027.
Cancer Research shops are popular for browsing vintage items while knowing your purchase supports a good cause. But the charity revealed in October that it would shut 88 shops by May 2026.
The organisation has blamed its downsizing on higher operational expenses and a shift in shopping habits.
The two-year programme could result in “up to 100 more” outlets closing by April 2027, trimming the portfolio to about 320 shops. But the charity also intends to launch 12 ‘superstores’ by 2028 in retail parks.
