A woman has been arrested and is facing charges of burning her five-year-old stepdaughter’s genital area with a heated steel spatula as a cruel punishment for bed-wetting
The disturbing incident near Kanjikode in the Indian state of Kerala, located on the southwestern Malabar Coast, was brought to light when the child’s preschool teacher noticed her discomfort while sitting and alerted the authorities. The suspect was detained by cops on January 8.
A local court has ordered the 35-year-old to be held in judicial custody for a fortnight while investigations continue. Charges have been lodged under the Juvenile Justice Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, India’s main criminal code that offers robust protections against against crimes aimed at children.
The Child Welfare Committee (CWC) has taken the victim into their care, who believed to be the daughter of Muhammad Intias, a Nepalese man working at a local hotel. The accused, Noor Nazar – also known as Rubi – is originally from Bihar along the Nepalese border.
Officials confirmed that the girl is currently receiving both medical treatment and emotional support as the investigation continues, reports the Express. Authorities also stated that the investigation is still ongoing, with more details expected to emerge as the case progresses.
This follows a heartbreaking incident in India that saw a six-year-old girl tragically lose her life after she was reportedly gang-raped and thrown from a rooftop. Despite immediate medical attention, the young victim was pronounced dead upon arrival at a local hospital.
The horrifying event occurred in the Bulandshahr district of Uttar Pradesh. While in another distressing case, it emerged that a 12-year-old girl died last year nearly a week after she was allegedly forced to do 100 sit-ups as punishment for being late to school, reports the Mirror.
On November 8, the young pupil at a private school in Sativali in Maharashtra was instructed, along with four other students, to perform the sit-ups. Kajal Gond, a sixth-grader at a school in Vasai, reportedly began suffering severe back pain after completing the corporal punishment.
“She was crying in pain and kept saying she could not move her back,” said her father, Sunil Gond.
“No child should be treated this way for being late.”
Her mum alleged that the punishment was exacerbated by the fact that her daughter was carrying her school bag on her back during the exercise, a factor she believes contributed to her daughter’s swift decline in health.
A few days later, the girl was taken to a hospital in Mumbai but she sadly died November 15.
