Got to pay the tax invoice one way or the other! Angela Rayner picks up a second job as she indicators with a talking company… regardless of having as soon as blasted MPs who earn additional money outdoors Parliament
Former deputy prime minister Angela Rayner has picked up a second job by signing with a speaking agency, it was revealed today.
The Labour MP, who was forced to quit her Government roles in September amid a furious tax row, is being paid by Chartwell Speakers.
A letter issuing her with advice on her appointment revealed Ms Rayner will ‘speak at one event for a pensions insurance specialist and then occasionally at private events’.
She is said to have promised to ‘not provide any insight into your time in government that is covered by confidentiality restrictions’ in her work with the agency.
Ms Rayner has taken on the paid work, on top of her £93,904 salary for being MP for Ashton-under-Lyne, despite having previously criticised politicians’ outside earnings.
She posted on social media in May 2023: ‘Being an MP isn’t a second job. It is the job. Labour will put an end to this racket.’
As well as resigning as deputy PM in September, Ms Rayner also quit as housing secretary and Labour’s deputy leader.
It came after a Whitehall probe found she broke ministerial rules for failing to pay correct stamp duty on an £800,000 flat.

Ms Rayner had referred herself for investigation after she tearfully admitted she had paid around £40,000 less property tax than she should have done.
She told the House of Commons in October that she would pay any taxes she owed to HMRC, amid reports she might owe a five-figure sum on top of a fine.
Despite her resignation following the row over her purchase of a new apartment in Hove, East Sussex, Sir Keir has said Ms Rayner will one day return to the top level of his Government.
Asked last month if she would be back in his Cabinet, the Prime Minister said: ‘Yes. She’s hugely talented.’
Ms Rayner asked for advice from Sir Laurie Magnus, who is Sir Keir’s ethics adviser, on her appointment by Chartwell Speakers.
In a letter to the ex-deputy PM, Sir Laurie revealed she had pledged to not ‘provide any insight into your time in government that is covered by confidentiality restrictions.’
He also highlighted the ‘standard conditions’ issued to former ministers on taking paid employment outside of Parliament.
This included not lobbying the Government or arm’s length bodies on behalf of Chartwell Speakers for two years from her last day in office.
Over the same period, Ms Rayner was also told she should not undertake any work with Chartwell Speakers ‘that involves providing advice on the terms of, or with regard to the subject matter of a bid with, or contract relating directly to the work of, the UK Government or its arm’s length bodies’.
Ms Rayner was also told she would have to wait a minimum of three months before taking up the appontment.
The former Labour deputy lashed out at MPs’ ‘shameful’ outside earnings in 2023 following a ‘sting’ operation by the campaign group Led By Donkeys.
Undercover footage revealed former Tory ministers Matt Hancock and Kwasi Kwarteng agreed to work for a fake South Korean company for £10,000 a day.
MPs are allowed to have second jobs and there is no suggestion of parliamentary rule-breaking.
Other politicians to have signed with Chartwell Speakers include former Tory PM Liz Truss, and ex-Conservative chancellors George Osborne and Philip Hammond.
Ms Rayner’s office has been contacted for comment.
