Meghan Markle joins 2016 development with 11-word Prince Harry put up – ‘you needed to be there’
As celebs share warm memories of the care-free world of 2016, Meghan Markle has hopped on the trend with a video shot by her daughter – and a fresh take on the online nostalgia fest
It’s a new year and time for a new look at an old you. Celebs are now flooding social media with snaps and clips from the great times they had 10 years ago.
The 2016 trend raging on Instagram and TikTok celebrates a more innocent age, when we used dog ear and rainbow mouth filters on Snapchat. Other highlights of the lost year included the launch of Pokémon Go, Apple Airpods, and Stranger Things on Netflix.
Not to be left out, Meghan Markle has hopped on the trend with an Instagram post, featuring both a photo and video of her and Prince Harry. Only she’s not signing up to nostalgia that other celebrities are wallowing in.
The Princes of Montecito, in fact, chose an 11-word caption for her post that punctures the wistfulness for a decade ago: “When 2026 feels just like 2016… you had to be there.”
She picked out a photo that shows her and Harry from when they were just beginning their relationship. They appear up to their ankles in a pond in grasslands.
The image is likely from their trip to Botswana in August 2016, which was also their third date. However, the black and white video she posted shows the loved-up couple from this year, cavorting on their lawn with a sonic backdrop of Olivia Dean’s ‘So Easy (To Fall in Love)’.
The credit for the video of their goofy dance moves, with a lot of performative hugging, is their four-year-old daughter, Princess Lilibet. Meghan, in other words, is telling the world that for her and Harry the heady joy of first love endures.
For these two lovebirds there’s no need for nostalgia. They still feel just the same as they did back then.
But the response of Instagram users who viewed the post at People’s account showed that – even if they’ve stayed the same – the world has changed. Plenty of People’s followers swooned over the clip. “Happy for them… Haters are sooooo boring,” said a post.
Another commented: “I really love them together.” Others gushed: “Love them.
“This made me smile” and “They are doing exactly what they want to do and good for them.” Most of the posts, however, reflected the dramatic plunge in couple’s popularity since the early days of their romance.
“Where is the privacy they asked for?” asked one post. Snarky comments included “Totally staged.
“No smiles on their faces” and “They keep topping their previous stupid thing.”
“This is the cringiest thing I have seen in a long time” said a user. Another blasted them with: “This is the only way they get views.
“Making out for the public to see.” Other online commentators pointed out that in January 2016, exactly 10 years ago, Meghan had much to be grateful for.
She was dating celebrity chef Cory Vitiello, starring in Suits, and moving in glam circles in Toronto. She only had 1 million Instagram followers back then – but, then again, they were probably a lot less snarky.
