Man Utd on excessive alert as Crystal Palace ‘make Oliver Glasner sack determination’

Crystal Palace have made their decision on the future of manager Oliver Glasner after he said the team felt ‘abandoned’ – fuelling speculation linking him with the Manchester United job

Crystal Palace have reportedly decided not to sack manager Oliver Glasner. Manchester United were put on high alert after it was early revealed the Eagles were considering sacking the Austrian, given he features on their wanted list as they hunt for a new permanent boss.

Glasner finds himself under intense scrutiny at Selhurst Park after his latest public spat following Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Sunderland. The 51-year-old claimed he and his players felt “abandoned” after the club agreed to a £20million offer from Manchester City for Marc Guehi on Friday.

Sky Sports reported that Glasner’s remarks have left Palace chairman Steve Parish “fuming” and he’s mulling over sacking the Austrian immediately – a man who’s been touted as a potential permanent manager for both Manchester United and Tottenham.

However, Sky have since claimed that Palace have decided not to sack Glasner following discussions, with the club wanting him to see out his contract to the end of the season despite his comments.

Glasner had revealed during his pre-Sunderland media briefing on Friday that he’d already informed Parish and Palace’s hierarchy of his intention to depart when his deal expires this summer

“My decision has already been taken months ago,” said Glasner, who arrived at Palace in February 2024 after Roy Hodgson’s exit. “I had a meeting [with chairman Steve Parish] in the October international break, we had dinner and a very long talk and I told him I would not sign a new contract for Crystal Palace.”

Glasner continued: “I told the team today the same, because I think it is now important to have clarity, because I don’t want this question at the players and ‘what is going on?'”.

“We had a very busy schedule, that is why we didn’t want to tell it just because we want the same, Steve and me, we want the best for Crystal Palace.”

Glasner then led his Palace side up to Sunderland, and despite going ahead through Yeremy Pino, they ultimately succumbed to a 2-1 defeat, stretching their winless run to 10 matches.

Following the match, Glasner seemed to direct criticism towards Parish and the Palace hierarchy. He remarked: “I think the players gave everything they could. We made no substitutions, look at the bench, there are just kids there.

“We feel like we’re being abandoned completely. Selling our captain one day before a game – there is no understanding for this.

“We are preparing and then yesterday [Friday], I get told that our captain will be sold, but why not next week? At least he can play this game and then next week, other players are coming back. It makes me really upset.

“If your heart gets ripped out twice a year, with [Eberechi] Eze one day before a game in the summer and your captain one day before a game – I’ve just got no understanding.”

“I’ve been in football for 30 years and never experienced this, not once. Now it happens twice in six or seven months. That’s just where we are now. We’re playing for weeks now with just 12 or 13 players in our squad. Some players have played their 35th game now.”

Glasner is the frontrunner to take charge at United for the opening fixture of the 2026/27 campaign after the Red Devils chose to axe Ruben Amorim earlier this month. Michael Carrick has stepped into the role until the season concludes and sits as second choice to lead the club next term.

Carrick secured victory in his debut match as United’s interim manager, steering the Red Devils to a memorable 2-0 triumph over Manchester City on Saturday. United controlled proceedings from the outset and the scoreline ultimately flattered City.

Glasner would also be keen on taking the reins at Tottenham should Spurs decide to dismiss Thomas Frank.
