Green chief’s bonkers plan to ‘punish’ Trump if he invades Greenland … by scrapping the UK’s nuclear deterrent and kicking out US troops, leaving Britain on the mercy of Russia

Britain should scrap its US-made nuclear deterrent and close American military bases in the UK if Donald Trump attempts an invasion of Greenland, the Green Party leader has suggested.

Zack Polanski, a long-term critic of the UK’s Nato membership, said the ‘poodle’ UK should take steps to become militarily ‘independent’ of the US, in the wake of the president’s threats to take the Danish island.

Writing in the New Statesman he said that the Uk should start by examining how to closing some 13 bases and expelling around 10,000 US personnel who have been based in the country since the Cold War.

The multi-billion-pound renewal of the Trident nuclear missile system should be ‘paused’, he said, while MPs debate whether to carry on with it.

Britain sources the atomic warheads from US stockpiles but maintains operational independence.

Pulling out of Trident would leave the UK without a deterrent at a time when Russian leader Vladimir Putin has made threats to the country due to its ongoing support for Ukraine

It would also put at risk thousands of specialised jobs in UK shipyards where the new Vanguard Class nuclear submarines are being built.

Mr Polaksi, a former actor and hypnotist, also said the UK needed closer relationships with Europe ‘as well as working within Nato today to ensure the alliance prioritises peacebuilding over militarism’.

He added: ‘Leaving the EU weakened this country and left us too reliant on the toxic so-called ”special relationship”…

‘If Trump were to take military action against Greenland, we need to be able to act fast to peacefully and quickly remove America’s military presence from our country.’

‘Even proponents of nuclear weapons see the risk of having a weapons system that relies on the USA.

‘Sadly billions have already been spent on Trident renewal, but we must not fall for a sunk-cost fallacy and should immediately pause the renewal and bring a debate to parliament on whether we want to spend billions of pounds on a weapons system that cannot operate without US support.’

Mr Polanski, a self-described ‘eco-populist’, took the reins of the party at the beginning of September.

He announced his candidacy with an interview in May in which he said he wanted the Green Party to drop its support for the UK staying in Nato.

‘Clearly NATO has got a lot more complex since Donald Trump has become president, and I don’t think anyone should consider him a reliable ally,’ he told the Byline Times website.

‘I think the age of NATO is now fully over. We voted at the last conference to maintain a relationship with NATO and reform it from within but I think we have reached a point where Donald Trump has made being in an alliance with America very, very difficult while he’s talking about annexing Greenland.

‘We clearly need to be making sure that our policy is meeting the moment, and I think the world is changing quickly, and the idea that we can reform NATO by working with Donald Trump at the moment in a so-called special relationship is an idea that’s on its last legs.’

The former Harley Street hypnotist, dubbed ‘the boob whisperer’ after once claiming he could help women increase the size of their breasts, is also a former Extinction Rebellion activist who was arrested at a demonstration in 2019.

Last year he showed his support for now banned terrorist group Palestine Action before it was proscribed.
