The first 500-mile EV has arrived: Volvo’s ‘game-changing’ EX60 can go from Fulham to Frankfurt on a single cost – this is how a lot it prices

Volvo’s latest electric family SUV has been unveiled – and it sets a major benchmark for EVs moving forward.

That’s because the new EX60 is the first battery car to go on sale in the UK that can exceed 500 miles on a single charge, removing the biggest ‘obstacle’ that has stopped people from switching to electric before now, the company says.

While the entry £56,860 version can go for 385 miles on a full battery, the most expensive all-wheel-drive variant is said to be capable of covering 503 miles (810km) without stopping.

To put that into perspective, it’s theoretically enough to drive from the affluent streets of London’s ultra-posh Fulham all the way to Germany’s financial hub in Frankfurt (497 miles) in one hit.

And even when you do need to pull over for electricity, you won’t need to pause your journey for long…

That’s because the ‘game-changing’ electric car can add 211 miles of range from a 10-minute charging session, meaning owners will spend about as much time topping up the batteries at a service station as they would filling up with petrol.

Volvo has boldly claimed that it will ‘set a new standard for its segment’ and hailed it the EX60 as the model that ‘solves the top customer concerns for buying an electric car’.

Bosses say the five-seater family SUV will ‘end range anxiety, deliver a groundbreaking user experience and represents the next frontier in safety’.

Based off the official claims for the range-topping P12 all-wheel-drive model, owners will be able to motor from Southend to Strasbourg in France (503 miles) or from the Channel port of Dover to Dunbarton to the north of Glasgow (490 miles) without lifting their backside out of the driver’s seat.

While pricing for the 503-mile version remains under wraps, based on RRPs for the bigger EX90 SUV, expect around a £18k mark-up for the most potent trim versus the entry-level car.

It means customers will likely need to pay between £70,000 and £75,000 for the long-ranger model.

It is expected to marginally gazump BMW’s forthcoming iX3 electric SUV as Britain’s furthest-distance EV. Its nearest rival has been quoted to have a range of ‘up to 500 miles’ – though the ‘official’ figure has yet to be announced by the Bavarian car firm.

The longest-range EV currently on sale in Britain is the Mercedes CLA, which was recently crowned European Car of the Year 2026. The svelte executive saloon is claimed to be good for 492 miles from a full charge.

Speaking at the car’s unveiling in Stockholm, Håkan Samuelsson, CEO of Volvo – which is owned by the Chinese mega firm Geely – said: ‘The new, all-electric EX60 changes the game in terms of range, charging and price and represents a new beginning for Volvo Cars and our customers.

‘With this car, we remove all remaining obstacles for going electric.’

The incredible range capabilities come courtesy of a combination of its lightweight construction, next-generation e-motors, and a new battery cell design featuring ‘mega casting’.

This also helps the EX60 to achieve the’ lowest carbon footprint for a fully electric Volvo car’. In fact, it says it matches the CO2 impact of its smallest EX30, making it a ‘better choice for the environment’.

A more off-road bias EX60 Cross Country will be available too, with specs mirroring those of the higher-trim EX60 EV.

It provides 20mm of additional ride height and black plastic bumpers around the body to protect the paintwork during excursions away from the tarmac.

However, it will have a slightly shorter range compared to the standard model.

Volvo EX60: Trims and pricing

Three different variants of the EX60 will be available.

The P6 – the only version with pricing confirmed from £56,860 – will be rear-wheel-drive utilising an 82kWh battery and 369bhp (275kW) electric motor.

It will have a range of 385 miles and accelerate from rest to 62mph in 5.9 seconds.

Customers have the option to upgrade to the P10 version, which increases the battery pack to 96kWh and ups the power to 503bhp (375kW) with the addition of a second e-motor to send power to the front wheels, making it an all-wheel-drive (AWD) car.

Range is upped to 409 miles as a result, with 62mph dispatched in only 4.6 seconds. Prices should be around £62,000 to £65,000.

But it’s the 503-mile P12 – powered by a 117kW battery – that’s stealing the headlines.

It is propelled by a 670bhp (500kW) AWD setup that trims the 62mph sprint time to a supercar-beating 3.9 seconds – around the same stopwatch time to the national speed limit as a 1990s Ferrari F40.

As is the case with every new Volvo sold since 2020, top speed across the EX60 range is limited to 112mph. This is part of the Swedish brand’s promise to eradicate deaths in its passenger vehicles over the next decade.

The EX60 Cross Country will be launched initially in P10 AWD guise, though a long-range P12 is also promised to follow later.

The battery packs are covered by a 10-year warranty and, when debuted in its home country, Swedish customers will get three years of free home charging.

Volvo has promised this offer will be ‘rolled out into other markets’, though hasn’t said if this will include the UK.

A 10-80% battery charge can be completed in as little as 19 minutes using the fastest DC charging devices. 'A quick coffee stop is enough to recharge and hit the road again,' Volvo says

‘Coffee-stop’ charging times

Using Volvo’s latest ‘SPA3’ 800-volt architecture, charging speeds are just as impressive as the full-battery range.

When plugged into the fastest DC charging systems available in the UK currently, the battery can be boosted from 10 to 80 per cent in ‘only 19 minutes’, the manufacturer says.

‘A quick coffee stop is enough to recharge and hit the road again,’ the car firm tells us.

‘It matches the range of a petrol car, charges as fast as your average stop, and is priced as an equivalent PHEV (plug-in hybrid) – while being a better car,’ it went on.

‘The EX60 turns range anxiety into range comfort and demonstrates that going electric is no longer a compromise.

‘Design, engineering, hardware and software all work together to create a car that optimises driving range and matches many petrol cars.’

Bi-directional charging also means owners can power their home appliances and personal devices via the car’s battery pack, ultimately turning it into a mini power station on wheels.

EX60 a showcase of Volvo’s pioneering safety kit

As we’ve come to expect from Volvo, it will also pioneer new safety features never seen before in a passenger car to retain its reputation for unparalleled occupant protection.

Beneath its archetypal stylish bodywork is an advanced safety cage structure that’s strengthened with boron steel to shield passengers during a collision – and should see it ace the European-standard crash tests conducted by Euro NCAP.

And while the Swedish brand is credited with fitting the first seat belt in a car back in 1959, some 67 year later it is debuting the evolutionary ‘multi-adaptive safety belt’ in the EX60.

It has been dubbed the ‘super seat belt’.

This is because it uses sensors to analyse the height, weight, body shape and seating position of the driver and passengers.

The information – along with other sensors that measure the scale of the impact when there is a collision – in a split second calculates the optimum pressure and where load is spread across the body to provide the highest level of protection.

Volvo said the new seat belt tech has the capacity to help ‘save millions more lives’ by providing bespoke protection for every occupant.

But there is other state-of-the-art safety equipment, too.

This includes radars installed across the full cabin – including the boot – that can sense ‘submillimetre scale movement’, such as a baby breathing.

If triggered when the car is locked, owners will be alerted on their Volvo smartphone app that they may have left a child or pet in the car.

In fact, the EX60 boasts a suite of five cameras, five radars, 12 ultra-sonic sensors and permanent 360-degree monitoring as part of its class-leading collision avoidance technology.

Another development – though more about styling over safety – is the innovative ‘Wing Grip’ door handles that Volvo is showcasing for the first time on the EX60.

These are mounted on bottom of the window frames to allow for the bodywork to remain flush and unblemished by conventional or pop-out door handles seen on the latest luxury cars.

You can chat to an AI companion… if that’s your thing

For those long slogs between Fulham and Frankfurt, a driver-only journey will be a lonely stint for any motorist.

But with the support of tech leaders including Google and Nvidia, Volvo has developed an ‘AI companion’ who drivers can converse with during these arduous treks across country – or countries.

‘The EX60 is the first Volvo car to launch with Gemini, the new AI assistant from Google,’ it says.

‘Gemini is deeply integrated with your car and lets you have natural and personalised conversations without having to remember specific commands.’

Chatting to a computer isn’t really up our street. Fortunately, an upgraded sound system means we’ll be able to block out the voice of the artificial e-passenger with our favourite songs beamed from our Spotify playlist.

With access to both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, owners will be able to pump their choice of tunes through each of the four main seat headrests, which come equipped with their own individual speakers linked to the premium Bowers & Wilkins system.

Pre-order books for the EX60 officially opened today (21 January), though first UK deliveries aren’t expected to arrive until September.
