Trump in Davos: All it’s worthwhile to know as Donald launches unhinged Greenland rant
Donald Trump’s wide-ranging speech in Switzerland lasted more than an hour as the US President gave a wild reason ‘ungrateful’ Denmark should hand Greenland over
Everything you need to know as Donald Trump launches rant in Davos
- Donald Trump was in Davos, Switzerland, to deliver an address at the World Economic Forum following concerns over his intensifying aggression toward the allied territory of Greenland.
- He accused Denmark of being “ungrateful” for the protection the United States gave Greenland during World War II – and urged them to give it back.
- Last weekend, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the UK issued a joint statement after Trump threatened new tariffs until a deal was reached on Greenland.
- The US President said he was seeking “immediate negotiations” to acquire Greenland, telling the audience: “It’s the United States alone that can protect this giant mass of land, this giant piece of ice.”
- Trump spoke on military action, saying: “We never ask for anything and we never got anything, we probably won’t get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength and force… We would be frankly unstoppable, but I won’t do that. I don’t have to use force. I don’t want to use force. I won’t use force”.
- He went on to make a chilling threat, saying: “So we want a piece of ice for world protection and they won’t give it. So they have a choice. You can say yes, and we will be very appreciative. Or you can say no and we will remember.”
- He also claimed America “won World War II”, telling a silent room they would “all be speaking German and a little Japanese, perhaps” if it weren’t for the US
- He said America is experiencing an “economic miracle” under his presidency, with economic growth the size that “no country has ever seen before”.
- Trump addressed migration too, claiming Europe was introducing “entirely different populations from far away lands”, before adding: “Certain places in Europe are not even recognisable anymore”.
- He also offered an update on the peace deal in Ukraine and revealed: “I’m dealing with President Putin and he wants to make a deal, I believe. I’m dealing with President Zelensky and I think he wants to make a deal. I’m meeting him today”.
