UK authorities urged to think about conscription as ‘fast menace’ of WW3 rises
A number of European countries are reconsidering national service or have brought it back in response to rising security threats from Mad Vlad and an increasingly-volatile relationship with the US
The British government should consider conscription to the army as the threat of escalating war in Europe continues to rise, a shadow defence minister has said. Tory Baroness Goldie said the UK should recognise the “immediate threat” faced by ever-increasing global tensions.
Speaking in the House of Lords, she said: “The threat that we are facing is immediate. Other countries, recognising that urgency, have taken steps to engage their public through a range of measures.
“From conscription at one end to seeking volunteers aged 18 and over for military training — as in France and Germany — at the other end.
“I think what this Chamber wants to know is what imminent steps will the Government take to educate the British public now about the gravity of the situation and to put the UK on to a comparable readiness footing to these other countries.”
Fears of a global conflict continue to rise as Mad Vlad’s onslaught of Ukraine shows no signs of stopping and there are fears Russian aggression could spread to other parts of Europe.
Elsewhere, China flexes its military muscle as it eyes up Taiwan and the ever-volatile Donald Trump continues to rule out military action to seize Greenland, which belongs to Nato ally Denmark.
Earlier this month, security expert professor Anthony Glees warned tis year will be “make or break” for the UK as our armed forces face an arms race to keep Russian aggression at bay.
He warned the Ministry of Defence it must “prepare for war with Putin’s Russia sooner rather than later”, telling the Express: “We need to ensure we are fighting fit for what 2026 is likely to throw at us.
“We need to spend vast amounts on building up a peace arsenal that Putin will find daunting.”
And earlier this week, ex-Conservative MP Tobias Ellwood warned the UK could “easily be at war with Russia in the next five years”.
He said: “We are still in a naive place because we have failed to admit that Russia is already in a grayzone war with us.
We are vulnerable as a society in terms of our national infrastructure, cybersecurity, cyber attacks, and disinformation. We need people ready to bolster stockpiles of artillery shells and things like that.”
