Antwerp mass stabbing horror leaves six individuals injured as police swarm

The attack took place in Antwerp, Belgium, during a Kurdish demonstration near the busy square of Operaplein – police say they have since arrested two suspects

Six people have been wounded, with two fighting for their lives, after a blade attack at a popular tourist destination.

The incident happened in Antwerp, Belgium, whilst a Kurdish protest was taking place near the bustling Operaplein square. Authorities have detained two suspects.

A police spokesman confirmed: “Four people were injured this evening on Operaplein. All suffered stab wounds.

“They were all stabbed, and two victims are currently in critical condition. Medical services arrived with several teams to provide first aid. Two suspects have been arrested.”

Four of the six wounded victims were located on Operaplein. According to local reports, a fifth and sixth casualty were found near Rooseveltplaats and Sint-Elisabethstraat.

Images taken in the city show police officers forcing a suspect to the ground, before completing an arrest. Around 50 protesters were present at the rally, with police already on site. Witnesses said the protest had been peaceful for most of the evening.

One witness said: “People were running in every direction; it was pure chaos.”

A video take from a building nearby shows emergency services racing to the scene and terrified local scream. Another clip on social media shows a victim being given medical treatment on the ground.
