Darts star James Wade admits his Luke Littler ‘drawback’ earlier than World Masters

JAMES WADE COLUMN: James Wade is preparing for next week’s Winmau World Masters and has an exhibition in Twickenham where he plans to tune up for the event

Christmas break has officially come to an end! After three weeks of complete rest – during which I didn’t pick up a dart at all – I’m now focusing on making a swift start to the season.

I know I’m already at a disadvantage compared to players who competed in the World Series events held in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. It’s simply the reality of the sport: those who participate in these ‘invitational’ events gain crucial experience in high-pressure situations, especially with the added intensity of performing in front of TV cameras.

While Luke Littler won in Saudi, it was fantastic to see Michael van Gerwen triumph in the first event of the year in Bahrain. His victory could serve as a strong motivator for him as he aims for an even more successful season ahead. I’m definitely keeping an eye on MVG during the Masters at Milton Keynes next week — his recent performances, including two finals at the World Series, indicate that he’ll be entering the event with a tremendous amount of confidence.

While exhibitions can be enjoyable and often serve as a light-hearted diversion, I’m approaching one particular event with serious intent. It’s taking place at Allianz Stadium, which some might still recognise as Twickenham from the rugby days, and I’m determined to win this tournament.

The competition will be fierce, particularly with formidable players like Jonny Clayton, Brendan Dolan, and Cameron Menzies in the mix. My first match will be against Brendan in a first-to-5 legs format, which adds an extra layer of urgency.

I vividly recall the dazzling moment when Brendan hit a 9-dart finish in Dublin at the 2011 World Grand Prix — it was unforgettable! I’m eager to avenge that match this time around.

The other semi-final will feature Jonny Clayton squaring off against Cameron Menzies, which promises to be a thrilling contest. I hope Cameron performs to his full potential.

Should anyone make it to the final, it will be played in a first-to-10 legs format, providing excellent practice for the challenges ahead at MK. I’ll provide an update next week – unless, of course, I end up losing, in which case I might have nothing to report!

Take care, Wadey.
