McDonald’s prospects ‘riot’ over ‘ridiculous’ worth of single hash brown
As the cost of living crisis continues to bite, McDonald’s has caused a revolt from customers after it upped the price of many of its items – including a singular hash brown
McDonald’s customers are livid after discovering just how much a single hash brown costs. It comes as the fast-food giant has slowly hiked up some of its prices as the cost of living crisis hits business.
Furious fast-foodies have been stunned to learn that one singular hash brown can cost punters a whopping £1.99 in some branches across the UK. And with money already being stretched far, many customers have vented their shock on social media.
It comes as McDonald’s continues to receive hate after it increased the price of some of its low-cost food. However, the brand has said that the extortionate prices are not reflected in all of its branches across the country, but rather a select few.
Stunned customers rushed to X, formerly Twitter, to share their frustrations at the sudden cost increase, according to the Sun. One user, clearly dumbfounded at the decision fumed: “It’s just gone bonkers,” while another said Maccies had gone “too far”.
A third heartbroken customer added: “Yes I ordered this recently and was shocked to discover it was only one.” Whilst a fourth hit out at the franchise, slamming: “McDonald’s used be on for a cheap breakfast but now it’s far too expensive for what you get.”
Whilst some customers are confirmed to be paying £2 for the luxury of just one singular hash brown, this is not seen in all branches of the country. It is believed that customers in just 5% of its hundreds of restaurants will have to pay that amount, whilst its regular cost sits not far behind at £1.69.
In a statement, a spokesperson representing McDonald’s said: “A significant proportion of our restaurants are owned and operated by Franchisees, who set their own prices. As a result, the price of individual items may vary; however, all share our commitment to providing customers with a high-quality restaurant experience and great value for money.”
But this is not the first time that McDonald’s has been blasted for increasing the cost of its food. At the end of last year, McDonald’s was slammed for ending its £5 meal deal, a longtime favourite for many workers and students alike, instead replacing it with the ‘Meal Deal Plus’ costing £5.59.
The fast food titan chose to swap the classic £5 deal for a better option, saying that diners could be able to get a lot more options, in exchange for an extra 60p on the bill. A Meal Deal used to include a Chicken Mayo or a Cheeseburger, alongside medium fries, a soft drink and a “bonus side” of four McNuggets.
But now, a Meal Deal Plus will allow for other options to be included in the “bonus side” option. If chicken nuggets are not your thing, you could swap them out for another Cheeseburger or Chicken Mayo burger, or a Mini McFlurry or apple pie if you’re in the mood for something sweet.
But even then, McDonald’s has not been doing well with fans in recent days after it announced a complete overhaul of its loyalty scheme, MyMcDonald’s Rewards. These rules will come into effect in March, making it cost more in order to get free food, much to the dismay of willing punters.
