Andy Burnham has officially requested to stand in the Gorton and Denton by-election, which would see him quit as Manchester mayor, paving the way for him to challenge Keir Starmer for the Labour leadership

- Mr Burnham would need to be selected by the Labour Party to stand in the Gorton and Denton by-election, allowing him to re-enter Parliament as an MP
- He could then try to force a leadership contest by gaining the support of at least 20% of Labour MPs (80 in total)
- Voting takes place among Labour Party members, affiliated trade union members and members of socialist societies. Mr Burnham must secure the highest number of votes and win outright through run-off rounds if applicable.
- After the ballot, the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee certifies the result and Mr Burnham would become Leader of the Labour Party.
- The sitting Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, would then resign and Mr Burnham will be invited by the monarch, as new Labour leader, to form a government and will formally be appointed Prime Minister
