England rugby star Peter Squires has died at the age of 74, with tributes pouring in to the sporting legend.
Squires made 29 appearances for England in the 1970s and also turned out for the British and Irish Lions team during their tour of New Zealand in 1977. Alongside his rugby career, Squires was also a talented cricketer who played for Yorkshire.
During his dual-sport career, he played in 49 first-class cricket matches. England Rugby played tribute on social media, writing: “Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of former England international, Peter Squires.”
Elsewhere, Yorkshire County Cricket Club general manager Gavin Hamilton said: “I had the pleasure of working with Peter away from sport for over ten years. During that time, he was both a mentor and a very good friend.

“His stories of his sporting exploits were always hilarious and fascinating. For someone who achieved so much in an era when sport was as tough as it gets, Peter truly shone, and above all, he remained incredibly humble about his achievements.
“He will be sorely missed and I would like to pass on my sincere condolences to Gail and the rest of his family.”
Squires remained a local legend in his hometown of Ripon, Yorkshire, playing for their rugby team into his 40s.
Ripon Rugby Club wrote: “It is with great sadness to share the news that today we lost our beloved Lion, Peter Squires.
“There will be a minutes applause before kick off on Saturday in Peter’s honour. We invite everyone to join us to celebrate his legacy and his lasting connection to Ripon Rugby Club.”
He also worked at Harrogate Grammar School as a games teacher after his international career, where he coached rugby union, cricket, hockey and athletics, among other sports.
