Brits warned over Storm Ingrid as chaos sees over 130 UK flood alerts issued

The UK is bracing for another battering from torrential rain and powerful winds over the coming days, with more than 130 flood alerts now in place as Storm Ingrid continues its destructive path across Britain.

Residents are being urged to remain vigilant, as the storm’s deluges threaten to bring widespread flooding to numerous areas, spanning the North East, Yorkshire, the Midlands, South West and sections of the South East.

An additional 17 flood warnings – which are issued when flooding is anticipated – remain active, primarily affecting York and coastal regions in the South West.

Flood warnings are released by the Environment Agency when predictions indicate flooding from rivers, torrential rainfall that could cause rivers to burst their banks, along with high tides and storm surges combined with powerful coastal winds.

The locations expected to bear the brunt include York, Plymouth, Weymouth, Bournemouth, Taunton and Great Torrington, reports the Mirror.

This development follows the announcement of additional yellow warnings for southwest England and south Wales on Monday, with Northern Ireland facing similar conditions on Tuesday.

The Met Office has cautioned residents in these regions to brace for heavy downpours, potentially followed by snowfall in the early part of next week.

“Cold weather, especially for those in the northeast, is on the cards with the potential for snowfall accumulations in places,” forecasters stated.

Certain areas could experience rainfall totals reaching 50mm, whilst other locations are expected to receive between 20-40mm.

The Met Office has also warned that the intense rainfall could trigger power outages and disrupt other essential services.
