Brits do not attain a inventive peak till they flip 67 – with many taking on podcasting

A huge 94% say they think they are more creative and adventurous than younger generations, with 69% believing they are more likely to achieve their creative aspirations now

Creative Brits don’t reach their peak until the ripe old age of 67.

New stats have shown that it actually never is too late to find a hobby you are good at, after a recent study found Brits are finding their favourite pursuits for life after retirement.

A new survey of 2,000 over 60s, shows it has taken until people’s golden years to get into their creative groove. And 67, the current age of Madonna, Kevin Bacon, Tim Burton and Gary Oldman, is the age we reach the top of our creative game, with two thirds – a whopping 63% – admitting they feel more creative now than when they were in their 30s.

A huge 94% of those asked even say that they think that they are more creative and adventurous than the generations before them, with 69% say they believe they are more likely to achieve their creative aspirations now than in their younger life.

Hobbies for golden oldies include writing books, painting, learning foreign language and even coding. Others prefer to learn an instrument, how to work with AI and even how to make jewellery. And 5% say they’re hosting a podcast.

The research also revealed that creativity plays a “vital role in combating isolation” for many older people. And 88% of respondents stated that creative hobbies help combat loneliness in later life, while nearly three quarters – 72% – say taking part in creative activities helps them feel more connected to others.

Writing in art-K’s Creative Renaissance report, founder Kathryn Harper said: “The findings highlight a powerful shift in how older Britons view creativity and ageing. This generation doesn’t see later life as a slow winding down.

“The tired assumptions about what people over 60 want from life aren’t just outdated, they’re being actively rejected by the very people they claim to describe. There’s absolutely no expiry date on creativity. We see people in their 60s, 70s and beyond discovering new talents and confidence through art.

“The vast majority agree that creative hobbies help combat loneliness and that creative activities are vital for wellbeing in later life. These are not small effects. They are telling us something important about what human beings need to thrive, especially as they age.”
