UK greatest gaming chain on brink of collapse because it seeks administration
A massive gaming retailer is the latest British company to be on the brink of administration – as GAME registered its notice of intention to appoint an administrator this afternoon.
The announcement today marks the second time GAME has fallen into administration. he development comes after 40 games stores were announced to be closing across the UK.
At the time of the previous announcement the retailer had 240 stores across the country – as it closed stores in Galleries Shopping Centre, Bristol and the Metrocentre Shopping Centre, Gateshead. GAME stores also shut their doors in Basingstoke, Chatham, the Bridgewater store and the Trafford Shopping Centre store in Manchester.
In 2019, as part of a £52million deal Game was acquired by the Frasers Group, owned by businessman Mike Ashley. Despite the acquisition by January 2020, the gaming franchise announced plans to close 40 of stores across the UK – at this time the gaming giant had more than 300 stores to its name across the country.
The development comes after another gaming retailer GameStop announced plans to close a “significant number” of its branches this year. GameStop’s closure comes after the chain closed 590 stores in the 2024 fiscal year.
GameSpot reported operates 2,325 stores in the US in early 2025, alongside around 3,200 globally. Since 2022 GameStop’s annual revenue has dropped by more than 35 per cent and its stock price is down 80 per cent after the all-time high it hit in 2021.
