Former Scottish Deputy First Minister Jim Wallace has died following complications from a scheduled major operation, his family has confirmed.

Lord Wallace, who made history as the first ever deputy first minister of the Scottish Parliament, was undergoing a procedure at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh on Thursday. Despite the operation being planned in advance, complications arose, leading to his untimely death.

Born in 1949, Jim Wallace was a key figure in Scottish politics, serving as deputy first minister from 1999 to 2005. He was a prominent member of the Scottish Liberal Democrats and played a crucial role in the early years of the devolved Scottish Parliament, helping to shape the nation’s political landscape during a formative period.
