Santander is to shut 44 financial institution branches – verify to see if YOURS is affected
Santander has announced plans to close 44 bank branches in a shake-up of its store network, in a move putting 291 jobs at risk.
The firm said the closures are due to ‘changing customer behaviour’, which has seen more people turn to online banking.
Closing branches will be replaced by Community Bankers, operating either from a Santander Local or, where required, a Banking Hub, to provide ongoing face-to-face support for communities.
Following the changes, the Santander branch network will consist of 305 branches including 244 full-service branches, 19 counter-free branches, 36 reduced-hour branches, and six Work Cafés, alongside 111 Santander Locals.
It comes less than a year since the company announced that it would close 95 branches across the UK, putting 750 jobs at risk.
The banking giant shut the branches in June 2025, while also cutting hours across 36 sites and switching 18 to be counter-free.

The majority of the planned redundancies are related to the branch closures, but about 12 per cent of the cuts are because of the reduced-hour proposals.
Customers are increasingly switching to online banking, with a 63 per cent surge in digital transactions since 2019 while branch transactions have slumped by 61 per cent in that time, according to the firm.
Santander said that from June 30 last year, the majority of the reduced-hours branches will be open just three days a week – either Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9.30am to 3pm, or Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9.30am to 3pm and Saturdays from 9.30am to 12.30pm.
