Donald Trump’s decline has ‘already’ begun as fears over ‘present craziness’ skyrocket

Political commentator Andrew Neil suggests Trump’s presidency is now declining, as fears grow over civilian deaths by ICE agents and arrests of journalists Don Lemon and Georgia Fort

A prominent political analyst has suggested that Donald Trump’s downfall may already be in progress, as concerns about repression in the USA escalate.

Following the deaths of Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti, two civilians fatally shot by ICE agents earlier this month, there’s been a growing unease about the state of democracy in America.

The apprehension has been heightened by the arrest of journalists Don Lemon and Georgia Fort, sparking fears about press freedom in the country.

However, political commentator Andrew Neil has proposed that with increasing speculation about Trump’s physical and mental health, his administration could already be on its way out.

In an article for the Daily Mail, Andrew suggested that with an increasing number of Republicans dissatisfied with Trump and his falling popularity rate, this could pave the way for more moderate politicians to step into the gap left by MAGA politics.

He stated: “The decline of the Trump presidency is probably already under way. If it ends with a whimper and disappointment rather than a celebratory bang that will embolden more moderate Republicans to reassert themselves, which in turn will encourage the Democrats to remain in the mainstream rather than strike out to the Left.”

Andrew, a former journalist for BBC and GB News, added, however, that even if Trump departs from office, his style of political manoeuvring will have forever altered America.

He stated: “A return to the American politics we knew before Trump is not on the cards. But America need not be condemned indefinitely to the current craziness.”

Andrew’s remarks were made in the wake of the arrest of two journalists, ex-CNN anchor Don Lemon and Georgia Fort earlier this week, which has sparked concern among press freedom organisations who have since reacted to the arrests.

Don was apprehended on allegations that he breached federal law while reporting on a protest at a church in Minnesota earlier this month. The justice department claimed that Don and three others had disrupted the exercise of religious freedom at a place of worship, accusations that Don refutes.

Georgia Fort, another journalist who was arrested, shared a video on social media showing federal agents outside her residence. After being released, Don declared his commitment to continue reporting the news.

He asserted: “I have spent my entire career covering the news. I will not stop now. The first amendment to the US Constitution protects that work for me and countless other journalists who do what I do. I stand with all of them, and I will not be silenced. I look forward to my day in court.”

In the meantime, the Guardian has reported that press freedom groups in the USA have denounced the arrests. Scott Griffen, Executive Director of the International Press Institute, commented: “The arrests of two independent journalists doing their jobs is a shocking and disturbing escalation of the Trump administration’s campaign against the free press in America.

“This is an unequivocal attack on the first amendment and the American people’s right to know. The outcome of this case will have direct consequences for the future of free media and free information in America.”
