Lucy Letby ‘on suicide watch in jail’ after lags mock her over new Netflix documentary

Prison guards at HMP Bronzefield in Surrey have reportedly been told to check in on the serial killer every hour and to engage in a meaningful conversation with her every day

Convicted baby killer Lucy Letby is being watched round the clock by prison guards over fears that she might take her own life after being ridiculed by fellow inmates.

Staff at HMP Bronzefield have been put on high alert after she was mocked by lags at HMP Bronzefield in Surrey following the release of a Netflix documentary about her this week. She is said to have been particularly teased for its opening scene where she is seen being arrested while still in bed.

There are also concerns that other inmates could attack Letby, who is serving multiple life sentences after being convicted of killing seven babies and attempting to kill seven others at the Countess of Chester hospital in 2015 and 2016.

Staff are now being told to check in with her every hour and to also have a meaningful chat with her for at least ten minutes every day. A source told The Sun: “They are keeping a really close eye on Letby because of the Netflix show.

“That means she is being checked on an hourly basis, or even more. Staff have also been told to engage in meaningful conversation with her and keep her talking for at least ten minutes at a time once a day or more. That is to gauge her mood and state of mind.”

They added that inmates are talking about the Netflix show and “mocking Letby about it”, adding that, “some have teased her about the opening scene, which shows her arrest.”

Despite lags not being able to watch Netflix, many are in phone contact with people outside and are also allowed newspapers.

Elsewhere, Letby allegedly boasted to inmates she will be released from jail within months. Last month, the Daily Star Sunday learnt the convicted killer believes her case will be re-examined by the courts.

She is understood to have openly discussed her conviction with staff and inmates inside prison. One source said: “Lucy is very calm and restrained, which is incredible considering she has been convicted for murdering babies.

“But she really feels she will be freed at some time this year. She says it’s up to the court to decide what should happen to her – whether that’s the conviction being quashed completely or face a retrial.

“Not everyone in Bronzefield believes she is innocent but she has now been accepted as just another prisoner. People have warmed to her, when Lucy first arrived she received a lot of abuse.”

Lucy Letby’s barrister said his team has “hope” that her conviction could be overturned, after a review found no medical evidence that the former neonatal nurse harmed babies.

Mark McDonald has said he has 26 separate experts and 1,000 pages of fresh evidence to back up his claim, which he has passed on to the Criminal Cases Review Commission.

In recent months, a small number of medical professionals and commentators have also questioned whether systemic failings within neonatal care were adequately explored during proceedings.
