A brave little girl battling cancer beams as a convoy of bikers delivers an astonishing 60,000 birthday cards to her doorstep, smashing UK records.
Seven-year-old Amelia Kolpa, diagnosed with a rare neuroblastoma in her stomach, has been in and out of hospital since she was just two years old. Despite initially overcoming the cancer, it sadly returned.
In anticipation of her eighth birthday next month, her family embarked on a mission to shatter the UK record for receiving the most greeting cards. Amelia’s mum, Katarzyna Bartczak, initially set a goal of 8,000 cards to clinch the record.
An online campaign urged kind-hearted individuals to drop off cards at three designated locations in their local area. The initiative quickly went viral, with folks from all corners of the globe rallying to help Amelia reach her target.
With less than four weeks to go until Amelia’s birthday on 3rd March, an astounding 60,000 cards have already been amassed. These will join the 23,000 cards previously sent to the family, which are currently stowed away.
On Thursday, 5 Feb, hundreds of bikers from across the UK helped deliver the cards to Amelia’s home in Rowley Regis, West Midlands. In a heartwarming spectacle, sackfuls of cards, balloons, and gifts arrived at the family’s residence in three vans.
Cards had even made their way from far-flung places like Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the USA. Hells Angel Matt Lem, who played a key role in organising the collection, said: “The response has been amazing and we’ve collected in excess of 60,000 cards.
“Amelia’s appeal just snowballed, everyone involved has been overwhelmed by the sheer number of people wanting to help smash the target.”
Thousands of motorcyclists journeyed from the collection points in Stourbridge to Amelia’s home a few miles away. Amelia welcomed crowds of supporters and even managed to wave as the cards were stacked in massive piles inside her house.
Her aunt Charmaine Grace, who helped organise the card appeal, said: “There is so much love and support for my neice. It’s beautiful to know that everyone out there is with us on this journey, and there’s still humanity in the world.”
“Grace is so happy to have the cards, she just smiles and that is lovely. We already have 23,000 cards which we have received and put into storage so we now have over 80,000 which is just amazing.” Amelia plans to open the cards and create a massive collage of them to be displayed on a wall.
